OK guys - brainstorm on cost to put this back to what a '66 actually looks like
Ballpark numbers (excluding the mechanical issues which is a whole other kettle of fish) to get her actual looking like a 1966 again?

It's a 912, it will probably cost 3 times its final value and this doesn't even consider the rust issues that might be lingering. If it was a 911 it might be worth it but there are easier projects out there.

Well, if it's a 912, it's had a six-cylinder conversion sometime in it's life. If the shell isn't rusty, then it's worth $7500 all day long.
But to get it back to 1966 status, It looks like you'll be spending somewhere north of $10k. And I'm being kind. |

I am sure others have more experience, but here is a start of a list.
Front fenders-$750 Rear fenders (remove flairs)-$500 Headlights-$300 Horn grills-$200 Front turn signals-$400 Front bumper-$350 Rear bumpers-$200 License plate panel-$100 F/R Bumper guards (optional)-$300 Deco strips all around-$300 Front lid-$200 Rear lid-$200 Rear grill-$300 Exterior mirrors-$100 Badging-$250 Strip black trim- Possibly new wheels- An entire new interior (pretty ratty looking)- Labor: R&R, paint, metal work and rust repair- The flip side is you will have parts to sell to offset the costs which might get you back 1/3-1/2 of what you spend on parts. Inoticed the red shroud, but didn't see if it was an "S". Again this is my guess. Definately not a $7,500 car for what you appear to intend to do to it.

Round numbers? $20,000 unless you can do bodywork, paint, fit, virtually everything yourself. A complete waste of money IMHO.

$20K plus. Depends on how original you want to go. This could easily turn into $40K Keep in mind that you'll be buying a lot of SWB parts that can also be found on a 911. Costs the same to restore a 912 or 911... the final value is vastly different.

You can very likely sell that '69T engine with Webers and all the later body work and trim for close to the $7500 purchase price of the car.
Then the work begins. I think the guys saying $10k are in the right ballpark. What people in this forum seem to not know though is that SWB 912s are spiking hard. Nice drivers are selling for $20-25K and pristine ones are selling for $40-60k. They have moved right up into the same price range as a LWB 69-71 911T.

Thanks guys - for general discussion purposes how hard is tracking down a proper 912 engine and what do they go for?

I think it looks like a $30,000 addition in any event. By the time you do the bodywork source an engine reconvert everything. You'd be lucky to get it done for 30

I'd say ask Howard Freeman from the "Found 30 years later" thread.

A 912 engine will set you back anywhere from $3-10k depending on specs and condition.
