Twisty mountain drive video

Hope this is OK. I posted this in another thread, but for the sake of you who are stuck in the snow and cold and your 911 is all covered up in the garage, this is for you....

Twisty Mountain Drive - Carrera 3.2

Some fellow Pelicans and I went out on a drive and I suction cupped the camera to my window. This is rough and uncut. Disclaimer is...it's 20 minutes long and your wife will get bored watching it.... until after the white pickup truck gets flagged off the road by the Arizona police (and flags us by). Again, not professional, but I remember I was without my Carrera for about 5 months and used to troll youtube trying to find clips of people driving theirs...

Mark.

Makes me miss driving mine. Yours is the first one I looked at and drove. Sure you want to sell it?

Thanks for sharing, Mark!

I'm at the 3 month mark of having the SC in the shop and being unable to drive it anyway since hip surgery 4 weeks ago so the vicarious ride was just wonderful!

This has been the longest amount of time in 20+ years of 911 ownership being without that sweet sound and it easily rivals not seeing my kids when they are away at school (please don't tell them that!)

I get to go visit my baby today and see if I can get in/out and engage the clutch and I'm feeling that it will be a go so I hope to get the gal back on the road next week and point her north or east or south to properly bring her back into the driving world.

One Q: why was the white truck pulled over and was the officer just standing on the side of the road to make the stop???

The white pick-up should have pulled over much sooner, did the cop actually signal him off the road?

I'll try to make the next one!

Yes, the trooper signaled him off the road in a turn out. I was right behind him and got a little nervous at first because I was really riding his 6 so he would pull off. I saw the squad car first, and backed off, then saw the trooper standing by the road signaling the driver of the pickup. He then waved me by! I waited for another turn or two before I opened her up again!

Thanks for the note. I was kind of in the same boat as you are when I moved down here. I had to ship my car months after I had arrived and being able to drive "vicariously" as you say, helped me

Josh had a better view of the cop, but honestly I just about had heart failure. The last time I filmed a mountain run *I* got pulled over! And the guy was visibly irritated that I was "FILMING" the whole thing and talked about impounding my car and my camera and being able to scientifically figure out how fast I was going from the recording. I didn't want a repeat of that event....

Hi Dean. You drove this one?! Small world ;0) So you got a taste of the original header/B&K exhaust experience, eh? Man, the first 2 months I started wearing earplugs when I drove in to work because my head was pounding from the drone. I've converted it back to stock.

Am I sure I want to sell? That's a loaded question. No, actually...but I'm putting it up FS on Pelican because it seems like it's time. I have this bad habit of buying sweet vintage German cars, spending a couple years tweaking them and getting them "right", then selling them. I can't explain it. Having a Pelican (or other true 911 enthusiast) buy it helps, though. Just knowing it's going to a good home.

I just had road-rage watching that...

Same thing always happens in CT. Go on a nice cruise, get excited to hit the twisties, get around the 3rd one...there's a minivan doing 8mph under the limit. EVERYTIME WITHOUT FAIL!

Beautiful place.

My thoughts exactly. In fact, coming back the opposite way I was driving solo (the rest of the guys were long gone) and I was getting some really good shots until I came upon this Hyunday Accent from California going like 12 mph...the ENTIRE way down the mountain! You'd think at some point they'd think "hm...there's a Porsche behind me who seems to really want to go...maybe I should let him by?" They passed several pulloff's but would not budge.

Yup, the heart always skips a beat or three when the man zeros in on us. I suspect that the best thing to do when they go off on filming is be quiet and/or mildly suggest that he ask for a posting on the Russian Steppe and see how those folks deal with the man when filming a traffic stop (or a falling meteor but I digress!)

One more Q: what type of camera/mount are you using?

Great video. Fun to watch the three cars in front and one in the mirror. I liked the different colors too. In Colorado, that driver in the truck most likely would have pulled over early on. With all the mountain driving around here, people are pretty courteous about faster vehicles.

Thanks again for sharing! It made my morning coffee much more entertaining.

In my experience, it seems like when I'm behind people in the 911 they passively aggressively drive slower, but if I'm in front, they aggressively ride my butt.

I hate to say it...and I'm putting myself out there to get flamed

BUT...

If the people are being like that and conditions are safe to do so (seldom are) I just pass them. No need to tailgate and ruin a good time.

lol. Good thoughts I once had an Austrian/American friend who was pulled over in his 944 for going over 100 and he put on his best Austrian accent (which he actually had but he made it thinker) and said something about being use to the Autobahn and they let him go!

The camera is just a little JVC HD palm sized. I'd have to look at the model. I picked it up on craigslist last year - it had hardly been used. It's a great camera in that it's tiny and still HD (and has a flip out viewer). I rigged up this stout dual suction cup gooseneck mount and attach it to the driver's window and put the camera right at my left ear (so it's like you're driving). I had to ad a slight wide-angle lens so I could get the tack/spedo/steering-wheel too...but I didn't want too much "fish eye" effect because then you don't feel like you're driving.

Sweet set-up! The mount was incredibly stable...you may want to market it (or PM me/post a pic of the mount so I can see if I can rig it...pretty please!)

As someone else mentioned, it was very cool to see the SC/Carerra in your side-view that was following...very nice work!

No need to get flamed. As they say, it all depends whether you're buying or selling. If I was the guy in front of me, I probably would have been pi$$ed that this idiot in a PORSH is riding my tail. Whatever. I will say this, though...on my last video I got disgusted and passed a couple cars on the double line (on a corner). Flames ensued ... and I have since mended my ways. I like to consider myself a pretty safe driver and felt I was taking a calculated risk. but I digress....

I was the one in front, and did consider this. But there were way too many blind curves. I also totaled my beloved 240Z my freshman year of college in a head on passing a line of cars. I'm a lot more cautious these days! Plus the bicycle traffic (why they risk their lives on a road like this I'll never know) made it too risky. We also have a lot of "snow birds" this time of year and they definetely have a relaxed driving style!

Mark,

Did you get any video of Yarnell hill? That was more fun due to the extra lane and I know I was really pushing it hard going up that. I know I took some 30 mph bends at 70+!

I did. I think I will have to jettison my grand plans of editing these down and making cool little films out of them and just post them all. My best 3 are the Yarnell hill, the Prescott run in this thread, and some solo clips coming back. This weekend I'll just dump them up on youtube as-is and let you guys see them.

That was me (and my wife) in my SC. If I'd known I we were going to be on film that whole time I would've brought some red and blue flashing lights.
