915 Transmission Problem

Just finished overhaul on my 911SC engine. Re installed engine/trans yesterday. Hooked up shift coupling to transmission shift rod. Gears seem to select properly, but no gears actually engage (ie I can spin the rear tires no matter what gear I select. Have unhooked clutch cable just in case it was somehow too tight and disengaging the pressure plate and disc. No change.

Thoughts anyone?

Not really clear what the status on everything is from your post...

Does the engine start? Ring gear installed on flywheel, right?

Through out bearing and shift fork connected?

Axle / CV joint bolts all accounted for and connected?

Any other work or adjustment you made on tranny when it was out?

There's only a few external connections for transmission

Spin rear tires...

With the car on the ground? (Roll) or in the air

I would disconnect coupler from the shift linkage rod and try to put it in gear by grabbing the coupler.... that would rule out the coupler/shift linkage being misadjusted so as to not allow the shift rod to move far enough to engage gears (but that would probably only happen with 1-3-5 or 2-4-R not both sets at once). you can also directly put the car into gears by draining the trans fluid and removing the small inspection plate at the bottom of trans. you can see the shift forks and stuff. if that does not work...agree with above post that it is likely clutch related if you worked on clutch.

Figured it out. It's an "open" differential , no limited slip. Soon as I droppef it back down off the jacks, it was fine.A glass of wine and some cogitating was all it took Thanks for the help!
