Scott, why are you so sour on Werks II. Galen puts some seats and Schroth harnesses in my race car and it was great. He's been a long time supporter of the POC. I don't use him for mechanical, but have never heard anything negative about him.

Ask around some of the old timers and see what you hear....

Here is just one part of my long sad story of dealing with Galen:

In the late '90's, I had purchased a rebuilt 3.6L engine (rebuilt by Jeff Ericson at Aase) from Steve Alarcon with basically break in miles on it for a race car project I was having Galen build. The project went nowhere though, through no fault of my own (another story for another time), and the engine sat in Galen's shop for a very long time. Over time, Galen and I discussed selling that engine many times but he and I never agreed on what it was worth. So it sat in his shop.

Fast forward to 2010 and I finally decide to build a race car using a different builder. The fresh 3.6L engine I own sitting in Galen's shop is perfect for my build. When I pick up the engine from Galen, he tells me that he cleaned it up because of all the crud that settle on it sitting in his shop for all those years. I thought that was nice and thanked him for doing that. He even helped me load into the back of my truck.

The person building my race car is also going to build my engine. It only has break in miles and I thought about running it as is for a while because of budget concerns. But, we decided to put new cams and pistons in it and make some crankcase mods.

What does the engine builder find when he takes it apart? Well, the first problem is the right side cam chain tensioner is gone. Anyone care to imagine what would have happened if that engine would have been started up with a missing tensioner? Then, the builder finds a cracked cylinder. I don't mean a hairline crack either. There is a gaping crack. He also finds that most of the heads are lose and there is damage from the heads bouncing up and down on the cylinders. Break in miles? What the hell happened?

I call Galen and ask him what is up with the engine. He tells me that he had a customer (Bob R) that had needed an engine in a hurry. He figured that since I wanted to sell the engine anyway, he would use it. He had problems with the engine from the get go and blamed Aase for all the problems claiming a tensioner was installed backwards. His customer finally cracked a cylinder so they took the engine out of his car and put it back on the shelf.

Did Galen call me and ask about using the engine? No. Did Galen ever call me and explain that he was having problems with the engine? No. Did Galen call me and tell me that my engine was sitting on his shelf damaged? No. When I picked up the engine from Galen, did he tell me any of this? No. He cleaned it up so it looked good from the outside and, with a straight face and his father standing right there, handed me a dead engine that he knew I expected to be completely fresh and ready to go.

I asked him how he could do this and he had nothing to say. He did not apologize or acknowledge that he had done something wrong. Well, he did "volunteer" to rebuild the heads of the engine after I tried to get him to fund the rebuild. When I got them back, the Ti retainers were re-used even though they were shot. That was the extent of his "help" on the rebuild.

Like I said, avoid them like you would the plague!

Wow Scott, I'm sorry to hear that. I do suspect that if "Bob R" needed that motor, Galen would not have waited around for your permission, especially if it had been sitting there for years. I know this...If Jeff Erickson at Aase said he rebuilt that motor, and Alarcon said it only had break in miles, than you can bet your life they were telling the truth. Jeff Erickson is as honest as Mother Theresa, almost to a fault.

I have no doubt that the motor I received from Steve Alarcon was as represented. I talked with Steve Alarcon, Randy Aase, and Jeff Erickson extensively about what went on.

I am confident, as were they, that there is only "problem" here.....

You should have gotten off your tail in the late '90's, not 2010, and retrieved your engine, period. We would argue that a man of wisdom would be wise to avoid you and your business practices. We find your lack of concern for your 3.6 most distasteful and Galen to be without fault.
You have no idea what you are talking about.

As I said, there is a lot more to the story. He never asked me to come get anything. Not ever! I tried multiple times through the years to get some kind of closure on the dead project. I couldn't get the project out of his shop until we came to terms on what I was getting back. He said I owed him money and I said he owed me what I brought him and some money. I asked him to document what I owed him on multiple occasions over multiple years. He always had an excuse for not being able to work that out and to call back X months in the future. I'd call he would another excuse. For a long while, he claimed that my car was unable to be moved because they built a wall in the area my car was being stored and the car would not fit through the opening they built into the wall. I think Fern's record keeping, or lack thereof, was part of the problem as well.

I was naive and thought that since he was my cousin's best friend, he would do right. So years of delays turned into a decade. By the time I figured out he wasn't going to do right, it was too late to get the BAR or courts involved. So it dragged on and on.

If you think Galen is without fault, you are more naive than I was.....
