911SC Speedometer Questions

I have been doing some research on SC's and find various cars online that have either an 85 mph Speedo or the 150 mph speedo.

I understand that during the SC run the US models were fitted with the 85 mph speedo. ( Thanks Joan Claybrook, another great idea foisted on the people by the government. But that's another topic )

Anyway, the problem is, if there is a 150 mph speedo in the dash, and it has been changed out, how to verify actual miles ?

If I see a 150 mph in the dash reading 76,000 miles I supposed it's possible that this gauge alone had registered that many miles and that there were other miles before gauge installation.

Just wanted to get some feedback on whether I was looking at this issue correctly

Thanks Boardmembers

If the car is 1981 or newer, you could try Carfax. That may help. Otherwise, the milage could be anything. Since the speedo/odometer comes out in about 5 minutes, I seriously doubt many low milage 911's...

Many of these 150 mph speedos were installed at the dealer.
Check the receipts for note of this (if you are lucky enough to have all the original paperwork). Also there are date codes on the back side of the speedos, that date should correspond to the prod. date of the vehicle.

I ran into this problem when I was looking for an SC. Both times the owner had no idea the speedo had been swapped, even though one car had a severely worn interior with 40K on the clock. I ran carfax on a lot of cars while looking, history usually only went back ten years or so. Complete records would be best if the owner has them.

It's not true that the entire run of SCs had 85-mph speedos. My '83 has the original speedometer and it's a 150.

my 1980 SC came with the 150 speedo. Not sure if it was dealer or factory installed, but i have almost all the records for the car and the mileage numbers all jive with what is represented on the speedo.

My 1982 911sc came from the factory with a 150mph speedo.
Production date of car was 07/82.

Thanks for the posts

Thanks for the posts guys.

Seems like the jury will always be out on mileage unless complete maintenance records bear out what the Odo says.

There must have been a year when they switched back however, maybe 83 ?

Finally, I can't believe anyone would have driven their SC for any length of time without swapping out the speedo for a more realistic one.

Talk to you soon and wish me luck on my SC hunt
