1979 sc noise from rear
took car on 600 mile road trip.first leg no noise. afternoon second day a bearing type roar starts. goes away when car is under power.coasting or just not accelerating it starts.to me it sounds right rear. bought a drive axle, started taking old one out tonight. anybody have similar noise. be glad to search -but does anyone realize what you get when "noise" is searched?information overload! bought car about 2 months ago. has performed flawless until this trip.

wheel bearings perhaps? mine does the same thing... im getting the rear wheel bearings changed hopefully this weekend. will let you know

From your description, I would say wheel bearing. Although, I would describe the sound as more of drone or hum; changing in pitch with vehicle speed and, perhaps coming and going if you slightly swerve the vehicle (loading and unloading the bearing(s)). Best to change both.
I would characterize a failing CV as more of a low pitched click, tick or knock sound; changing in frequency with vehicle speed. Been there and done that with both of these. Jerry M '78 SC |
back and forth(left-right) i did not get the bearing noise change that you would expect.noise was definitely very noticeable right before we came to stop.
