I was just reading thru the "passenger comments" post. There was some mention of crooked gauges. Can the tach. and speedo be rotated easily. I think I read in my Bentleys that the gauges can be pulled straight out so a slight rotation shouldn't be a problem. I'd like to rotate them since my wheel blocks my speedo gauge above 60mph.
Any wire length issues or line-up tabs to worry about? Thanks, Don 87 coupe |

I don't have mine rotated, but I did pull them out to check connections on the tach. The big ones didn't come out easily from the front, so I removed the clock (far right where the boost gauge will go some day), and reached around and pushed the speedo out from the back, then the tach from the back after I got the speedo out. It doesn't look like there would be a problem with wire length if you wanted to rotate them. There are no tabs that I could see, just slid out and back in.

How about removing the glass to clean the inside of the gauges? Mine get a lot of moisture in them in the DC muggy weather and the tacho is even dirty on the inside. I guess, if there's already mositure there, then I don't have to worry about breaking some seal. Anyone have an opinion here?

Yup, I think that was me who wrote that. I have aftermarket (smaller) steering wheels in both of my p-cars, and especially on the track it helps to rotate the gauges so you can better see the "important parts" i.e. the oil idiot lights and the redline section of the tach.
On the 69-89 cars, they are just held in by the rubber "o-ring" seal around the edge. Press fit. They usually easily pop out, but if yours have not been removed for years (if ever) then it would help to reach in thru the trunk area and give it a push from the back side. The wires are long enough to pull each gauge out from the dash a few inches, i.e. enough to disconnect all the connectors if required. Just don't pull too hard or too far, or you'll have a mess on your hands! Hey Chris
Can the tach gauge be pulled out far enough to change the bulbs . Or does the wheel have to be removed? ------------------ Bob 1982 911SC Targa PCA - Founders Region |

Bob, on my 72, which has a larger steering wheel than your 911 (I think) with some wiggling the Tach can actually be removed with the steering wheel in place. No problem to pull out enough to change the bulbs.

Hi everyone,
Check out this web site, I think it will answer all of the questions presented here. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/mult_gauge_face/mult_gauge_face2.htm ------------------ Tom Sharpes 90 C2 Targa http://members.rennlist.com/myc2 |

Bob,
I replaced my bulbs and rotated my tach without removing my steering wheel. Hope this helps. ------------------ John '81SC Targa |

Thanks for the info guys.
I guess that 27 mm socket is a half inch drive . Any other uses for that or best to borrow one? ------------------ Bob 1982 911SC Targa PCA - Founders Region |

Make sure the socket is thin walled. I had a hard time finding one that would fit. Ended up using a 1 1/16. Also broke one of the plastic clips off that hold the pad on, when it was pulled off. Repaired that with Super Glue. This was all on a 88.
