What is the flow rate of a Carrera radiator cooler?
I have access to some oil to air radiators that are similar in size to the Carrera cooler. I don't want to starve the oil tank of oil and I don't want to overpressurize the external lines because the regulator that opens and closes flow to the trombone/Carrera radiator has a pressure relief valve which when there is too high a pressure the oil will skip the outboard loop (like cold start up).
Does anyone know what the flow rate is of the trombone cooler or a Carrera style radiator? Even though my radiator is an acceptable size (for cooling surface area) I want to make sure it flows enough oil. Thanks. |

You have two things to look at: the ID of the fittings and the total flow area of the internal channels.
The carrera and loop coolers both have fittings that are 19 mm ID. You need -16 fittings to get comparable flow from an AN style fitting. The loop cooler is a 19 mm ID tube throughout. The carrera has several smaller internal channels that work in parallel. I don't know the sum of their area but it is fair to assume it is similar to a 19mm tube or better.

Thanks Chuck. Mine, from what I can measure (exposed fitting is a little larger than the hole into the radiator core) is about 14mm. The fitting outside the core is also female so I am going to have to insert a threaded line/fitting into a 17mm opening. I can't expect that whatever fitting I put in there (aeroquip) to be much bigger than 13mm or 14mm ID. Doesn't sound like enough.
You're correct in thinking that radiators are usually designed so that the core can flow as much as the inlet and outlet. I didn't have the 19mm brass tube ID figure so I appreciate your help with that. |
