When should I install me Wevo RARB Consoles
 
I'll be starting my suspension rebuild soon and will have someone else weld in my Wevo RARB consoles. Should I have them installed before I start or when I'm done? Thanks for any replies.

If you are ging to have the car cornerweighted after the work, you might wait till the adjustments are done, then hold the bar and mount up against a clean prepared chasis to weld. No worries abut preloading the bar.

If on the other hand, you are getting a rear bar with adjustable drop links, you canhave the mount welded in any time.

Doesn't really matter when you do it. If you are removing the trailing arms and spring plates you'll have better access to the area where the mounts are welded, but it's not all that different than having all of that stuff on the car. 6 of one...

Thanks for the advice. I should have mentioned I've got a set of Smart ARBs going in also.

Agreed it doesn't matter. Just make sure when they weld the mounts in place that they mock-up the sway bar to ensure clearance from the trans crossmember. I know on my '79, that has a big fat rear sway bar (kinda overkill since i've found it to be set at the end soft positions), it's considerably close to the trans mount.

good choice on the mounts. Those suckers are never going to break again

Kevin..Thanks for the heads up on the clearance. Can I do the mock up with the trailing arms ect..removed. This will be the first time I have a Porsche suspension apart, so I have limited knowledge at this point.

Steve Weiner said they Wevos were a must have item w/ the Smart bars.

I have the Smart bars and I think my previous owner bought the big 'ol 31mm rear sway bar. It's a big hunk of tubing!

So I know what Steve is saying about those bars putting a hurtin' on the mounts. I tore one of mine completely off at Grattan. Shame on me for clipping apex curbing.

You can certainly do the mock up w/out the trailing arms or the spring plates installed.

I have been wondering the same thing - I am replacing my mangled original mounts with the WEVO consoles and currently have the axles, trailing arms and spring plates removed (but engine and tranny in position). I am planning to cut/grind off the old mounts and have a local mechanic/welder come to my house to MIG the consoles in place. I figured that with the trailing arms and spring plates removed, I will have much more room to work with, given it's only up on jackstands, not a lift.

My understanding is that I should attach the swaybar to the consoles, so that when the consoles are welded in, the swaybar can rotate freely without binding - is that right?

I am simultaneously upgrading from an 18mm to a 21mm rear swaybar, so I am conscious of the need to clear the transmission mount too.

Yes you don't need the suspension in place to install the sway bar. The critical issue is ensuring you don't place the sway bar too close to the trans mount and create interference.

Not a bad idea to have the suspension out of the way. Welding in the new mounts on your back with low jack stands is THE SUCK. Been there, done that. VERY aggravating! :D

The WEVOs are really nice and very durable. They'll never break. But one thing to keep in mind is they lower the bar a bit and some people have issues with ground clearance in certain instances (like 15 in. wheels and small diameter tires) just so you're aware.

Another option is to use the Buckley Racing mounts. They sort of piggyback the existing mounts and don't lower the bar. Might actually gain you a little bit of clearance?
