Non cancelling turn signal

My '76 911 turn signal is not cancelling. I am assuming I need to take the steering wheel apart to see what the problem is. Anybody worked on this issue and can tell me what I need?
Thanks

There is a plastic ring that has a tab on it that breaks. Though that is on my Momo setup, but it is similar to stock setup. Remove horn pad and then there is a huge nut you remove. Remove the clam shell. If you have the tool use a puller to get the wheel off the splined steering shaft. After that you can look at the back of the wheel and see whats up.

Another common thing is misalignment. If the wheel has been changed and the position is off alignment it will turn the signal off early in one direction and late in the other. If it doesnlt flip off at all it may be a broken actuating arm.

Yeah, as Euro911sc says, you'll have to remove the wheel. I just carefully pulled mine off, use caution as if it comes off suddenly you'll smack yourself in the face.

Here's a very old thread on how I fixed my issue. Cheap repair, but it's worked well. The photos may help you.

I later learned, that on my '75, at least, that the cancelling "tab" sits on top of the plastic "arm" which is activated by the stalk, and by on top, I mean that they line up like this -I I- (from another thread, which I'm not sure I can find). So in hindsight it was most likely an alignment issue on my car. Others with more experience can chime in.

However, the nails did the trick and the indicator is working as it should, and there are a lot of other things to fix on my car. . . . meaning that I may not mess with my "fix" in the near future.

Good luck.

How easy is it to take the horn pad off?
Great info, thanks, everyone.

So, you think I need a plastic ring or am I okay with the nail thing? If its best to go with the plastic ring, is there a source for this part?
Will I have any problems down the road with just using the nails?

Gently pull the horn pad towards you. It will "pop" off the wheel. Then, You'll have to disconnect the wire for the horn from the back. Then you can access the bolt that holds the wheel on. The canceling tab is part of the piece that acts as the horn ring. I list the part number in my "tales of a ratty 75" post.

The part should be the same for your car but check.

Once you've accessed the back of your wheel, you can determine if your tab is broken or if it is an alignment issue. If broken, you can remove the ring and either replace or do the cheap ass repair with the nails. Now that I am thinking about it, I added a third one. As two wasn't enough.

One caveat - this is not a "stock" repair and while it has been working well for me the car is not a daily driver and if you make the nails too long as part of the "fix" you will mess something up inside the clamshell (there are wires that could be snagged, etc.).

Do this fix at your own risk!!!!!!!

I am wondering if the tab coming off the switch looks too short and this is why the turn signal doesn't cancel?

Is the picture of the tab when the indicator is on, because it should stick out more when activated and thus the steering wheel slip ring tab effectively pushes it back in cancelling the indicator.

It can also be "self-cancelling" by using your left hand and returning the signal wand to the neutral position after the turn is completed. I never could get my signals to cancel after replacing the stock steering wheel with a MOMO and just got used to self-cancelling. I also have this problem on my wife's Miata and our '96 4runner due to replacing the stock wheel with aftermarket.

This is the picture with the turn signal "on".
I was wondering if there was a way to fix it without having to buy a new one.
