Snap, crackle from gauges ???
Hello all,
Upon heavy acceleration, and not always, I here like a snap crackle, almost sounds like glass breaking, coming from the gauges. Any idea what this may be as this is the first 911 I have ever had that has done this ? The car is an 80 SC and has had the gauges rebuilt by the PO but I do not have any paperwork to confirm this. Thank you in advance for your help. Happy St.Patrick's Day ! |

Perfectly normal and it's one of the unuqie traits about these cars.

So I am not going insane lol
What actually makes that sound and where is it coming from ? I thought my gauges were getting ready to explode . |

I am dealing with the same problem! Haven't noticed it for over two years now and all the sudden it has started happening. I have checked all the wiring and rear of the gauges and I have not seen anything awry.

While I don't have an SC, could it be the Oxygen Sensor Mileage Counter behind the speedo, or one of the other relays mounted behind the dash?

My 79 SC has done this in the year I've had it. I think its just the various plastic parts shifting small amounts against each other, like little tectonic plates!
No reason to worry.

I love the quirks - this is one that is so odd, yet so normal!!
I am pretty sure its thermal expansion of different CTE materials causing a point of stress with a sudden release - POP (click) whatever you call it - and the oil guage is one of the culprits of this

You have the classic symptoms of RCS. (Rice krispies syndrome)

it's kind of hard to remove the bezels without dicking them up and it will look like shyt when you put it back on. there is a special tool that is supposed to roll the lip of the bezel onto the guage and keep it looking neat and round. If you contact our host or hollywood speedometer it might be cheap enough to have it done.
