Cold Start RPM
I have a 1977 911s. Cis for fuel. When I start her up, she shoots up to close to 3000 rpm for a period of time and gradually comes down to an idle speed of 1000. I don't think that it should run at that speed. Is there a way to bring it down so that I don't throw a rod or something horrible like that?

3000 is too high, should be around 1800-2200. There have been some threads about people adjusting their aux air regulator to reduce the cold-idle speed. Try a search on aux air regulator.

If everything else is working correctly, it's the auxilary air regulator (36 on diagram) that controls warmup idle speed. It can be adjusted but pushing the plug at the tapered end. Take it out and use a small socket and a vise to do the adjustment. Look through the hole to slightly close the opening when the AAR is cold.
