Not specific to the 348, but the Ferrari subject has come up before.

have read all pitfalls abot 328's etc was wondering if 348 came any closer to ferrari's aim of producing a usable sports car to rival porsche

I think the 348 had some significant engine durability issues, at least for some (many/all?) of its years.

Something about valve guides wearing out in 15,000 miles, as I recall. May have been some other engine component, but it was an internal component that is big, big $$$ to get resolved.

I think the earlier 328GTB/S is actually a great car. I've not heard about any major issues or problem areas with those cars. They look great, are fast and are relatively durable (by Ferrari standards, at least).

I may be wrong but I think I read in Calavino (however you spell it) that the 348 had the worst feeling (to shift) transmission in Ferrari history.

But darn I'd sure love to have one!

Ca-va-llino - meaning small horse, as seen prancing on the hood badge ( not meaning to be condescending, simply educational)

I was at the Festival Italiono in Carmel last Friday. There were close to 1,000 cars with about 500 from the House of Ferrari. Everything from 512's to 348's to 360 Spyders. Fun stuff! They were kind enough to have a separate corral for those non-Italian cars from Porsche and a few British Marques. The Porsches included a very nice 959 in silver.

To answer your question... the 348 is a wonderful car, but as with all Ferrari's the cost of maintenance is terrible and the shop time is frequent. I have been lucky enough to have gone through more than 20 Ferrari's over the last 22 years (no 348's) and there is a reason why they have very low mileage... they just aren't that reliable.

I switched over to Porsches because they are the only truely reliable sports car (or maybe I have been exceedlingly lucky). If you are going to spend 60-70k (or more)on a Ferrari go out and buy a 330GTC or an earlier car that doesn't have such a clutered engine compartment. Much like early Porsches, these cars are a pleasure to work on and much easier to maintain as an owner. As much as an early 12 cylinder car can be a pain in the butt, they are a joy to listen to, hold their values quite nicely and they are an absolute blast to drive.

Porsche... there is no substitute... because all of the really exotic cars are in the shop or on a flatbed... Just kidding!

Bruno... LOL. It really wasn't a personal crack and I still love your car. Ok, so you had to prove me wrong... nice guy!

Sorry to see that you had to flatbed the baby. I wish there was more that could have been done before you got to that point. I will shoot you off an email... to catch up, of course.

Hello

Best is you buy the last years and be prepared to see the prices will drop on further. Better invest the money in a more classic Ferrari and see the value grow.

Make sure you can afford the car. If you have to think about maintance costs or a set of tires better move to a less robbery car.

Grüsse
