level of expectation on the purchase of used 964 parts
Dear fellow pelicaners,
i hope this is the right forum, if not MOD feel free to move. I am currently working on replacing some parts on a grand prix white 964 (also posted WTB thread here) - nothing major just the rear spoiler, the shark fin and some other misc to get the car back to perfect. I was searching around online for who would have the majority of the parts i need in stock and came across a retailer that when i called him mentioned he also sells used parts. Never occurred to me to search for that specifically but i saw the potential of some $ and time saving if he had them in the color i needed. 10 mins later and a return call and it seemed that i got lucky and they had the rear spoiler and shark fin in grand prix white and also had some small stuff (shark fin and all other cover sills) in stock so i ordered everything from them. I did question the condition of the parts on the phone and was told they are free of major scratches and stuff but they of course cannot guarantee a perfect color match - makes sense. So i ordered everything and want to share with you what i received so you guys can give me a reality check and adjust my level of expectation on used Porsche parts since i never ordered any new parts. 964 512 017 00 rear spoiler with grill - $547.12 964 559 095 01 sill cover (driver side) - $119.60 below you will see pics and i hope you can just give your opinion if what i received was in line with what i paid. My biggest concern is the cracks in the "brackets" on the rear of the shark fin - the original parts were torn off so this was the only reason i replaced them in the first place. It took me about 30 mins to remove the two fasteneres that came with it since i was scared that i would end up tearing them all the way and then the entire mission would be futile. (also posting in the 964 section if and how you guys think i should "fix" them before mounting) thanks in advance for your replies. click on the link to get to the picasa album. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-e...0/IMG_0008.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1...0/IMG_0010.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e...0/IMG_0014.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-x...0/IMG_0178.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e...0/IMG_0180.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-4...0/IMG_0179.JPG |
that's why used parts are cheaper than new. sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, you just have to decide how much $$ you are willing to gamble with.
|
well, good sir, i am aware of the philosophical question used vs new,
however, and hence why, i am asking for the expert opinions here if i "won or lost" this one ? since i never ordered used parts before and want to ensure that my level of expectation is on par with the cost of the parts that i have presented here before you together with the exact amount of how much cheaper they were than new. thanks for your reply and keep them coming update on the shark fin, while i was super gluing the one tab i found this : https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-S...0/IMG_0206.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-q...0/IMG_0208.JPG |
You bought used parts..you paid retail used parts prices.
For reference, I bought a perfect rear deckled with spoiler from a Guards Red 964 a few year back for $250.00 from a fellow Pelican. Look here first and be patient. The best deals are from fellow enthusiast that don't have the overhead that a brick and mortar business has. You didn't get ripped off, just didn't buy from the right source. |
ok, i guess i can live with that..... thanks for the reply !

So the deck lid with all the scratches and gouges on it is the one you bought (and was told it was free of major scratches)? Is so, I would be very upset, had I ordered and received that, and would send the MF back in a heartbeat.
|
those look like pretty typical used parts condition wise. i can't tell from photo but most of that stuff on the decklid could just be scuffs that will come off with rubbing or polishing compound and a paper towel.
|
only some of that tape residue come off with 50/50 water and simple green and microfiber.
the scratches stayed and most of it will not be able to be polished out, i guess it comes down to how you define scratches. |
If you paid less than 1/2 of retail new pricing......it's a fair price. You have to expect warts unless they were hidden or misrepresented.
If the used part is unobtainable from others.....you pay what you can get it for. |
you'll get what you pay for is one thing. another thing is what kind of conversation you had before you ordered, if there is any? Did you ask for the condition? What kind of answer did you get from the seller?
To me, if seller said perfect, no scratch no crack, then I would not accept this. If they said it's good used. Htere might be minor scratch and cracks here and there, then may be it's acceptable. Quote:
