Starter won't engage, steering lock? - '82 SC

Sometimes, when turning the key from the 'run' to the 'start' position, it won't spring back to the 'run' position, and the starter won't engage. Does this mean my steering lock is FUBAR'd or would simply replacing the electrical part do the trick?

The spring and contacts are all held in the electrical part .. look at it this way .. i would certainly start there before you get the sticker shock of the whole mechanical piece. I dont think thats it though.

My issue at times when the lock is binding is I can't move the key even to the run position. I rock the steering wheel and it seems to release. I think it sounds like you have an ignition switch issue.

Sounds a bit like this chap's problem. Maybe this thread gives you some pointers:

Exactly what happened to me. I searched and found the thread that is linked above and also this one: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/348306-ignition-switch-inside-fix-start-lockout.html

and one more: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/476908-ignition-switch-springing-problem.html

You can narrow it down to the electrical part of the switch or that little disc separating from the tumbler by removing the electrical part of the switch and testing it with a flat screwdriver into the slot. If you have a good spring action there then the problem is with that disc/tumbler.
