They removed it, and replaced a front marker light bulb for free. |
So is the noise gone with the sway bar removed?

removing the bar definitely made the ride sound a ton better. I'd still like to put it back on. debating whether I want to attempt it myself or just buy the parts and pay a welder to put the mounts on. |
I lived in VT for quite a few years and it's definitely not the place to run a 911 as a daily driver. Between the snow, salt, and mud season, it's a recipe for disaster! Sell it and buy a Subaru.

Based on your "Garage" it looks like you have a 1977. I've seen CIS engines make loud popping/banging noises (really loud and ugly sounds) under load due to fuel starvation. When have you last changed your fuel filter? might be a clogged fuel filter since your bad noises only happen under load.

I haven't changed the fuel filter yet. Guess I should do that anyways. The car has been driving fine recently, even in 20 degree weather here in VT. |
The noise is back! It's gotta be those CV joints. I have an appointment at Utton's tomorrow morning to have their opinion on it and for them to weld in my new WEVO rear sway bar mounts I just received today.

What did they find?

I'm about to order a CV joint kit from our host for $450 but I'm still trying to decide if I need to do all that or if I can just replace the boot and regrease for substantially less $$. I'm planning on trying it myself. Uttons is about 1/4 miles from my place and there's an auto supply store 1/4 in the other direction, so I can walk to get parts or drive a short distance if I just need to bring it to Uttons if it is too much for me. This means no car for me for another week I suppose. Hopefully I can get the parts next week and fix it next weekend. My workload is very heavy right now, so I have limited time after hours to work on my car (I should be working now!) |
If they are making noise I would think they are too far gone to repack. You can't rebuild them, just repack and re-boot. Get new ones!!

We have a member on our professional forum up in VT. Can remember if its Phil or Craig. Will post a request tonight & find out which one is where.

I would guess that if your CV is bad enough that it is making noise, then you probably have more to replace and a repack won't do it. HOWEVER, I would recommend that you take it off yourself and inspect to figure out what you have to replace. You probably won't need the whole CV and can get away with replacing 1 or 2 parts for substantially less. My experience, while limited, shows that the damage is pretty obvious. Putting it back together is rather easy, so go for it. Good luck! |

I am going to put these suckers on this weekend. I see there are some good threads here to help guide me. I'll take pics and keep ya'll posted, |
If you need new bolts for the CV's check Aubuchons hardware. If they don't have them in Barre/Montpelier the one here in Bradford had some.

removing them is what stresses me out the most. I don't want one to get stripped! I am familiar with Aubuchons...it's 1/2 mile from my place. I can walk there in a few minutes. I know I need a circlip thing, 32mm (? think that's right) socket, a hollow metal pipe to extend my breaker bar, and possibly the boot strap fastening tool. I cleaned up my workspace tonight and tried to wash off my car. I couldn't find my nozzle. I went through a ton of boxes trying to find it and a bunch of other porsche parts I had shipped here but no luck. No proof of having paid taxes yet, either. |
