Correct Rear Seat Belts for '74 911 ?

Were the correct rear belts retractable or not? Plastic receptacle? A pic would help! I doubt it matters, but this is for a Targa. Looking to buy some as original.

Chuck,

I'm not sure that a US '74 would have had rear seat belts. I think they started putting them into US cars in 1978. Other markets may have had them. Porsche often raided the VW or Audi parts bins for parts like these.

I have this set that I removed from a ROW 73.5 or 74, some years ago. The plastic piece around the base of the fixed portion of the belt tends to flex with use and eventually crack, as can be seen in the photo. It's a separate piece that doesn't affect the use of the belt, so it could be removed. I think the buckle half of the belts is still available, if you wanted new ones, for around $100 each side.

My '74 is a USA model. It doesn't have rear belts (they may have vanished at some point) but the anchor 'sockets' are there. Were belts simply not included in '74, even though the anchor points are there?

The anchor points were there but I don't think all markets had the belts. Everything I've read indicated that the US didn't have belt in that year in the back.

Amazing that they weren't there by '74. I guess the thought was, you're so wedged in there what can happen? And yet, 5mph bumpers needed! LOL

So I guess the plastic restractable version would be the ROW option and most appropriate for a US model.....

That's what I think would be the most appropriate for a '74. Earlier cars used a different release button and the design was changed again in the 80's for something slightly different.

They may have been an option, there may be cars that have been retrofitted with them by a previous owner... it's hard to say.

If you decide you want a set, and if you think the ones in my photo are decent enough (a little cleaning wouldn't hurt and I'd remove the lower plastic piece on both of them), let me know.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff -

Let me know what you would want for them and I'll see if I can get the replacement parts needed.
