Factory Gauge Face Color?
I recently bought a speedo from an '84 Carrera, and installed it in my SC. I got tired of trying to convert KPH to MPH, so I went with a US speedo. When I installed the gauge, I noticed that the face has a very, very, very slight "grayish" tint to it. My other gauge faces are black.
Soooo, I ended up buying the rest of the gauges from the fella so they'd all match. Well, I received them today, and I'll be damned if they all don't have the same black faces as my gauges. Did the speedo in the '84 Carrera's have a slightly different face than the rest of the gauges? Thanks!! |
I don't think so, Michael.. Wasn't 84 one of the years with 55mph speedos? Could have been replaced or refaced already...?

If the dial is not a deep black, and the needle isn't bright orange anymore, it probably has not been resurfaced/restored/re-silk-screened. If it doesn't match the other gauges, I would guess that it wasn't part of the original gauge set that came from that car. A previous owner probably swapped it out (for this used one) when the original one died.
Discoloration like that is usually associated with old age, and/or UV fading (especially on older Cab's and Targa's that spend most of their time with the top off/down in the Southern latitudes with year-round sun). ;) |
