Exhaust leak.
I think I’ve probably got an exhaust leak from between the head and the heat exchangers. What kind of problems would this cause? Is this minor, or a major performance robbing kind of thing?
Thanks to all. ![]()

I have the same problem with my SC. I notice a popping noise inbetween shifts at higher rpm that sounds similar to backfiring/exhaust gurgle. My only concern, that may not be well founded, is that I notice the oil return tube near the offending leak is colored from the heat. I'm curious if this uneven heating around the head studs may cause a problem.
BTW, I participated in a track event before I tracked the problem down. Anyone? Noel |

First - I'm no Porsche mechanic. However, I have worked on small airplanes for many years - which are very similar (aluminum, opposed, air cooled engines). An exhaust leak where the header meets the head can erode the gasket mating surface at the exhaust port of the head. This can become unrepairable - ruining the head. At a minimum I would remove the header, ensure the header mating surface is flat, and reinstall with new gaskets.
Perhaps the real experts around here will have other suggestions.

I have a symptom very similar to what Noel described. It only happens when downshifting to 2nd gear though, and internittently at that. Is this a big deal?
