1984 Targa worth?
Guys other than looking for the Yellow targa noted in my other post I am thinking of looking at a different 84 Targa.
It is a Blue 84 targa with 16 inch Fuch alloys, whale tail and sport seats. Leather sport seats and Cd player are reported as well as new tires and recent tune up. It has 131K miles on it. Reported as a 8.5 out of 10 and is owned by Porsche Tech. What is the value of this car? He is asking $14K Thanks Eric Eric.Lynch@itt.com

I paid $14K in January for a car that sounds like it was in similar condition, but with 83K miles.

So think this car is over priced? What would be fair price? Also are the 84 Carreras a good daily driver? Are there issues with this year that I should be wary of?
Thanks Eric

Eric,
I'd be asking him what the maintenance records look like on the car. Any major repairs and how recent. I have one and it's been outsanding for the most part. The mileage is getting up there and you'll be looking at an engine overhaul or rebuild, possibly a tranny rebuild etc in the next couple of years if those haven't already been done. That'll cost you about $10K unless you do all the work yourself and there's no telling when one of those bombs drop once mileage gets higher. Don't get me wrong here 131K is not huge mileage but it's getting up there. I have 138K on mine which is an 84 Targa and I'm doing both new tranny and just rebuilt the engine. Now my problems were not caused by the car failing by itself but how it was treated by the driver (not me by the way). But never the less I was looking at those two issue anyway myself in the next couple years. It's something to think about because a $14K car becomes a $24K car real fast under the wrong circumstances. Dan O |

Thanks Dan O
The current owner said he has had it for 5 years and done nothing to it until recently. He said it sat until just recently. He reports he gave it a complete major service, valve adjustment and all. I am willing to bet that he has no service history other than that. He said tires new and car was repainted (to original color) due to some minor dents on the rear quarters. Only thing reported as not working is the AC. Says it looks like a rock took out the component behind the front fender/bumper. Not sure I will even have a look at it since there is a deposit on it already. Also thinking a 1991 S2 with 76K miles on it for 3K less might be a better option... but then again it is not a 911..... Oh and he said he re-torqued all the head bolts if that means anything. Not sure if this is common practice on the air cooled engines. I know water coolers... maint more. Thanks Eric ![]()
