Audio advice requested: how to bottom mount rear speakers
I have an 87 930. It is my understanding that with most modern 4x6 speakers bottom mounting is required for clearance. Does that just mean that you remove the leatherette package shelf and mount below the leatherette instead of above it? Or do I need to mount below the metal shelf below the leatherette?

Bottom mounting reduces the clearance. Mount them on top of the upholstery, using a spacer if needed for clearance. Whatever you do, don't cut holes in the metal structure.

Well, I suppose it would depend where you cut it. There are several stampings that come together in that area, so there are places that you have a double wall. I would not cut any holes that allow air to pass from the engine bay to the passenger compartment. Lots of reasons for that...

Ok, so I think I'm now understanding what you meant by "metal structure", what I was referring to was just the aluminum collar screwed to the rear vinyl/deck panel that supports the speakers - definitely not structural.
I'm hoping to finish the installation today so I'll report back on how the shallow mount Retrosound R-573N's turn out.

I'm talking about the clearance above the speaker so the grille can fit over the coaxial tweeter. I think you are talking about the clearance under the magnet correct?

I understand now I think. I didn't realize that there is space between the appholstered trim piece and the firewall. I assumed there was some sort of cavity that the speakers sat in tha was a welded on part of the shell.

I was talking about the clearance under the magnet. If you have a tweeter that sticks out too far, use a spacer between the grille and speaker (if you are using the stock grilles) or use the grille supplied with the speakers. If you need spacers, let me know.

Well, I'm not in the speaker spacer business... I do have a pair of factory spacers that I bought for a car that I ended up selling, so I don't need them. They were originally used on the 944's and carry part number 944 555 159 00. They are about 1/4" thick. If you think they might be useful to you, I'd sell them. They are new, genuine Porsche and in the original packaging. I've attached a couple photos.
