911 shock question
my front shocks are wore out. I see there are several types on ebay and understand bilstien are the best? I dont know if I am going to keep my car forever so I am asking if the koni are still pretty good shocks? also what type do I need for my 75 911 the rears are easier to identify. but am having a hard time with the fromt. I see the they are cartridges? thanks for your help

Front is strut inserts and rear are shocks. Koni's are top of the line struts and shocks. I would rank them as Koni #1 and Bilstein #2.

Koni strut housings are usually red. Bilstein housings are usually green. Boge are black. If you have Koni struts, only Koni inserts work. If you have Boge, I believe any of the three inserts will work if you order the proper insert and gland nut.
You can use any brand of shock for the rear... My '75 911s has factory Koni struts and shocks, and I am in the process of replacing them with new Koni's. |

I did the same with my '74. Bilstein front and back, with inserts in front and shocks in back. The originals were Boge. I used the sport Bilsteins.
Bilstein are good; Koni good, but cost more.

Buy them from our host, some of the ones listed on Ebay are knock-offs.

I prefer Bilsteins, as I feel that the Koni's give a harsher ride. I have a used set of Bilstein rear shocks for sale in the classifieds, if you go that route and don't want to spend the money for new ones.

general question. is it neccesary to have the front end aligned after replacing shocks? might be a dumb question. but is an honest one. thanks

Possibly....if the new shocks raise the ride height it will.

The other side of the coin is that if you have enough miles on the car and the shocks are worn out, you probably are overdue for an alignment, anyway. MAybe also ball joints, bushings, etc.

I picked up my front and rear shocks. looks like a chore to replace. just a couple general questions if you dont mind. on the front struts do I need to have a spring compressor? and do I remove tire and do I need to remove the ball joint on this? or can I remove the nut and take the strut right out the top>
the rears look interesting. how many of the engine componets do I need to remove to access the top of the shock? I would like to do this myself but need some more ammo. looks like it will be a chore. just need some general imput. thanks guys brent

If you do not have the 101 Projects book, it is a good one to pick up.
