Air Conditioning Sytem Flush?

I'm in the process of replacing my a/c compressor, upgrading to barrier hoses, and replacing the receiver/dryer. The compressor rebuilder suggests flushing the system before evacuating and recharging. The a/c shop where I'm going to have the system evacuated and recharged says that I only need to flush the system if there are signs of black "gunk" or metal in the system when I remove the old parts. So far, the compressor is out of the car and the oil I got out of it appears to be a golden color, with no signs of black "gunk" or metal.

So, do I flush the system and spend more money on the "bleeping" a/c, or do I take the shop's advice and not do the flushing? Comments and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks much!

I would still have it flushed. The a/c on these cars aren't very efficient to begin with so I wouldn't half-a** the a/c job.

Scottb,

I went through the same thing at the beginning of the summer. New compressor, barrier hoses and dryer. I found no gunk or dirt when changing the components, but decided to still have my system flushed just in case. Once your system is open so is your wallet.

If you do not find junk in the oil and it is a golden color a flush is not necessary. A good evacuation is all that is needed.
The flushing is necessary if there is junk in the oil or the oil is black in color. Flushing will remove the junk and the oil.

My local shop is saying it will cost about $200 to flush the system. That seems high to me. Has anyone paid to have it done, and if so, what were the charges? Has anyone done it themselves? If so, how did that work out?

Thanks again.

Scott,

My shop only charged $40.00 . You may want to get some quotes. Don't recommend DIY.
