Seat options in my 911SC

Fellas,

I want to get the gawd aweful cloth racing seats out of my '78 911SC, and put something leather back in. What are my options? I'm thinking of something from a 928S4, but I'd like to know about ALL Porsche seats that will fit into my car with little or no modifications. Will 928S4 seats work? If not, what years/makes will bolt in directly? I don't care if they are power or manual.... Thanks!!!

M409 would be a option (sport seat) available on the 78 and thats it. Standard seat for everyone else. Along with heat options, lumbar options, leather, cloth and vinyl. depends what you want for a option (like the PO did) a good set of 911 seats recovered in the color leather you want would be around $!000-2000 range (higher for sports). I would stay away from other make/model seats. nothing wrong with stock sports

Got 87 power seats

It is all about bolt patterns. Some seat vendors have adaptor rails on the shelf. To my surprise I got 87 black leather power seats from PS Racing when I picked my car up (long ugly story). I specifically asked for some manual early sport seats. I made the adaptor rails and the seats fit well. However, the power is not what I wanted in a 73 electrical system. If you can use them I will make you a deal. Check the seat vendors in the Porsche magazines for adaptors and seat options.

I appreciate the response, guys. So, if I purchase seats from a 928S4, then I will have to modify the rails to make it work? I thought most 80's and 70's model seats were interchangeable, as there seems to be a lot of seat swapping going on in those years. They are not direct bolt in? Forgive me for my seat ignorance. LOL

...bump.... Can anyone comment on whether 928 seats are direct bolt or not?

pull one of your seats out, measure between holes, and check the 928 seat

Well, that is the plan eventually, but it's hard to believe no one has done this before, or has any experience with such a swap. I'd rather have an idea before I start ripping seats out. Just asking a simple question.... :P

well from the lack of responses i don't think the rank and file approve of this kind of cross platform swap. Only 4 bolts, takes 15 min to remove

No guarantees, but I did install 85 Carrera seats into an 83 944. I think the 944 would be very similar to the 928, so it is possible.

Yellowbird,

Do you have the 928 seats already? I have replaced seats and used 944 seats. I'm have a pair of new leather seats from a 996 waiting to be installed. Like someone suggested earlier, inspect and compare the 928 seats to your current seat's mounting mechanism. I'm sure this has been done numerous times before.

Even if they are not exactly similar to your 911 seats, they could still be mounted using mounting seat brackets as adaptors. Recaro, Momo, Sparco, etc. have been used widely in 911 cars, yet they are not identical to the 911 OEM seats. Keep us posted.

From the murky depths of my 928 ownership years I thought 911 and 944 seats did not fit a 928 so would expect the reverse to hold true also.

Wow, thanks for the input, guys. I know where I can score a set of 928 seats for a reasonable price, so I was hoping that they would just bolt in, even if some minor modifications are necessary. I've looked at 911 seats both from older, and newer models, and the ones that are in nice original shape are few and far between - at least in a reasonable price range. For some reason, 944, and 928 seats are just more plentiful, and generally priced well. I see recovered 911 seats available from time to time, but there are almost invariably vinyl. Not that there is anything wrong with that... I just prefer leather. Also, another concern is that most of these seats are power, and mine originally were not, so that presents another challenge, but hoping that isn't a big deal to wire them for power.

If my memory serves me correctly, my early 928 seats felt quite a bit wider than my 911 seats- you may want to ask one of the 928 guys to measure the overall width of the seat bottom to make sure you can squish it into your space... hopefully my memory is wrong! ;-)

I just recently ordered Corbeau GTS II seats for my '83. They will be in next week so I can report back after I get them installed. They make brackets for just about every 911.

Corbeau: GTS II

I picked these because they are new but look a bit more like the old Recaro LS-B's of the era.

I found a lot of pretty wide range in prices for the same seats so it worthwhile to check around.

Really? PET for a 911 shows 928 part #'s for power seat parts/rails as fitting 86-up Carrera, and manual seats with 928 part #'s from 85-up.

I've got 78-84 sport seats bolted to 944 rails (no difference other than the 4x, 5x price markup for "911" rails) in my '77 - and pretty sure plenty of folks have bolted 85-up seats (all of which carry 928 part #'s, according to PET) into earlier cars.

928 seats will definitely bolt up in your 911SC. All seat mounting patterns were the same for 1974-1998 911/912E/964/924/944/968/993/930/928. 1965-1969 911/912 had a wider track spacing and required adapter brackets for mounting.
1997-up Boxster and 1999-up 911/996, the seat mountings were changed altogether.
