steering loose/tight??
i currently have my79sc up on jack stands with wheels off and the steering tends to go loose and then tightens up it does this on the ground also but it really seems worse. took steering wheel off and it looks like the po put in a 928 style sleeve, once again the steering wheel its is not loose there is no play or up n down movement i was thinking about trying the leland sleeve i checked and greased the u joint and sleeve below it. what is the opinion on taking off the plate on the steering rack and shooting some grease in there? i'm kinda tryin to short cut a complete rack rebuild as its finally gettin nice here in new england my car been on jack stands the last 3 mos new exhaust studs, complete spring plate rebuild,er rubber bushings lowered it, header install, new rear window seal, and fit a tre rs bumper, so i kinda wanna drive any help or suggestions would be great!!!!

I would check the u joint on the steering column near the rack real well. You would be better off removing the connection from the rack so that you can inspect the joint in all directions. I've also seen the needle bearings rust and start to pit the lower shaft

My '89 developed a 'notchy' feel to the steering, and it turned out to be the lower bearing in the steering column went bad... it had this stiff/loose feel even with nothing connected to the lower end of the steering column. In the end I found a way to replace the bearings w/o removing the steering column, you can search for it.
