Tips for removing engine surround rubber seal?
 

Hi all,

I'm finally back working on my 911 since my hand is mostly healed. So far I've got the engine on the stand and removed some miscellaneous parts from the engine bay (heater valves, fuel lines, etc.). The car is almost 100% disassembled. I still have some small things like the engine bay gasket that I can't figure out and I was wondering if I could get some help.

Does anyone have tips or tricks for removing the rubber gasket from around the perimeter of the engine bay - the one that seals up against the engine sheetmetal? I haven't looked in the service manuals yet, so please don't flame me if it really simple. I just thought there might be an easy and a hard way to do it - I'd like to do it the easy way ;-).

Where the seal terminates, the metal channel corner is pinched in a bit to hold it. Pry this open with a screwdriver. Grab hold of the seal, and just pull it straight away from the channel, it just pops out. All done! Very easy.

Now getting it back in...gawd that's an absolute nightmare. I've done it, and I'm still paying for the trauma therapy.

Charie, I think I just coated the new seal at the bead with some silicone grease and slid in back through the channel. Sounds easier than it was but that's the way I remember it going back in. Not that bad if you take it slow.

If your engine is out and the car on stands, sit on your garage floor and the seal will be at eye level. You'll see how it is pinched into place. Open the ends that may be crimped to hold it into place (and a few compressed flanges here and there from bumps while working on the car) and it'll slide out. With lube, the new one will slide in.
