Doubt you can find a Bosch box cheap. Lorenfb fixes them. JoeBob knows other rebuild sources.

MSD will work great and is cheap. However, the labor to pull off a pro install is steep for a DIY guy. Budget a weekend for anything other than duct taping it to the inner fender. I like under the driver's seat positioned in a manner that keeps it an inch or so off the floor.

"i need one cheap"

I never understand these comments

Why not just ask for a free one ?

Systems Consulting...Automotive Electronics

send it there if it's a bosch part. reasonable $$. if it's perma-tune, round file it, can't be fixed.

Warren,

The cheapest Bosch CDI I've seen lately were between $250 - $300 in this forum. I doubt you could get one cheap unless the seller is giving you a failing unit. I have four (4) CDI spare units (3 in the basement and 1 installed in the engine test stand).

These CDI are getting older and harder to find good working unit. Keep your finger crossed someone might have one laying around.

If its a capacitor, wouldn't you just look for the one that's swollen on the top? I've never been inside one of these so I could be wrong but I have repaired some boards on appliances etc and you can usually visually see the bad capacitors because they're swollen at the top. It's worth a shot.

+1 Lorne recently rebuilt my cdi and my SC is as happy as ever :)

I recommend you get in touch with my buddy Bob Ashlock here:

He can fix you right up.

You can also replace your CDI box with an MSD street fire. I did it on my SC, it works just fine and is cheaper with a smaller form factor than the MSD 6AL.
I think I paid $149 for mine, new.

Street Fire Ignition Control - 5520

Yes, but that applies only to a specific type of capacitor, an electrolytic capacitor wherein the electrolyte overheats, sometime sso much so that the capacitor EXPLODES! Also not altogether unusual for the electrolyte to simple leak out via the provided pressure relief "port".

"THE" capacitor must be a mylar low ESR type of 1-2 microfarads not known for failure absent severe over-voltage.
