Manual Window Mechanism Restoration

The windows on my '74 are in need of some love. Who has pulled out the entire mechanism to do a re-furb, and can give me some pointers?
I'd love to pull the whole shebang out, put it on the bench and go from there, rather than try to work on it in the door.
Thx,
-C

I've pulled out the entire thing before. I don't think there any specific pointers.
Tell you the truth, I don't think there is much to gain on the bench, I would leave it in. That way you can see how everything operates, and lube/clean hanging in the door.

You know the window frames are adjustable too. Maybe those are getting tight and causing the window to not roll up and down smoothly. Worth taking a look. All that will be visible when you remove the door panel.

Might not be the route you want to take, but I went with the superseded one. It took drilling a few holes but works great. I felt mine needed too much to be worth fixing.http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/John1/tech_bull7.jpg

Thanks Gents,
Good ideas. Converting to the later type will run in excess of $600, so thats not an option for me. I guess I was thinking that pulling the whole mess out would make changing the seals and felts easier. I'll have another look and ponder. Does changing the "regulator" help any?

The newer regulators are supposed to be a bit smoother, although the originals probably work well enough if in good shape and lubed. The felt makes a difference, too. If you pull the windows, pull the frames and windows out as an assembly. Removal of the regulator is a bit of a hassle. Other than cleaning and relubricating the things, about all you can do to it is to replace the pivot pins.
