Thumbs up Time/Route fastest trip- Long Island to S. Florida

Okay, anyone know the most direct, traffic free route from New York, south to S. Florida and approximate time in hours at speed limit!.
May drive the car south after weekend and incorporate it into a business trip
Thanks
Ben

Hey Ben,

What's this "speed limit" thing about? Around here (NY Area), you'll get rear ended if you do the limit.

Hey Ben,

by the way, use Mapquest.com for the best route. Never fails for me, and will calculate the time of the trip as well, and yes, according to the posted limits. Most of all, Have Fun!!!!!!!!!

Ben, I'd take a the side roads and have some fun. There must be some great beaches on the way down there.

Cool

I've driven that route too many times to remember! Grew up on Long Island, went to school at Univ of Fla, lived in Ft. Lauderdale for 10 years....

Its pretty much I-95 South for the most part... You can take Verrazano across Staten Island over the Goethals and pickup NJ turnpike south...

You take that all the way down to the Delaware gap pickup 95 South again & stay on it till you reach South Beach...pretty easy.

Just FYI, DON'T SPEED IN MARYLAND ...especially anywhere near the Delaware border. Northern Virginia & North Carolina also have some aggressive speed trap areas, otherwise its pretty much smooth sailing otherwise.

If you have some extra time, once you get to Jacksonville,FL you can pick up A1A which is very scenic. Takes you all the way to South Beach as well (at a much slower pace though due to being 2-lane). But, like I said, if you have time, between Jax and Daytona, it is a gorgeous drive!

I just moved to Atlanta from St. Augustine FL and loved the section between Jax and St. Aug. Very straight, few cars, few cops, and great views (if I ever dared to look sideways).

Ditto 95 South....
Took me 18 hrs to get from Orlando,FL to Providence,RI a few years back. I'm sure you can beat that time from Long Island.

If you're going to be hitting the DC area anywhere near rush hour, I'd steer clear of as much of the DC beltway as possible - especially the Springfield interchange... Check out www.springfieldinterchange.com for after hours lane closure times as well as it can really screw your trip up. If you want an alternate route to get away from part of this, take Rt 5 South off of the beltway (95) and follow to 301 South towards Richmond. It gets kind of commercial for a while with a good bit of stoplights, but opens up in towards Virginia for a pretty nice trip and view of Maryland. If you want to cut off DC entirely, from 95 South - the Baltimore beltway, take 97 South until you hit 3 South. After about 10 miles or so of somewhat busy towns (Crofton and Bowie) it turns into 301 South and opens up as well. Regarding the Baltimore beltway, I usually prefer the eastern half of the beltway instead of the western half. You have a toll bridge that sometimes can back up but during off-peak hours, a much nicer drive with some interesting views of the Baltimore ports.

Anyway, some other Baltimore/DC locals might have differing views, but there's mine... And if you take 97 South, you can almost see my house out to the right after you pass by the New Cut Rd exit - don't forget to honk and wave.

Thanks guys,
I have to deliver a section of our main engine exhaust (10" by 11") for repair in Ft. Lauderdale FL and so will be taking the shortest/fastest route. This looks like the I95 by most accounts with a few advised detours to avoid local traffic. I will print this thread and take it as referance along the way.
I am reckoning on two days to comfortably do it, which sounds about right!.
She seems to be 'purring' at the moment and so hopefully it will be an eventless journey!.
I will take my laptop, just in case though!.
You guys are a lifeline!
Wish I had more time to enjoy the route, but will have to save that one for another trip!.
Thanks for the tips and local knowledge ,
Rgds Ben
