brake pads + cool collar

Just ordered Mintex when I have good OEMs on (just put em on a month ago). OEM's are extremely messy. I had no idea how much better Mintex are. This is a worthwhile upgrade. The brake dust collecting on my car right now is awful. It's totally unreal. Back to Mintex!

I also ordered a cool collar.
THATS RIGHT MAN, I JUST ORDERED A COOL COLLAR. MESS WITH ME MAN, MESS WITH ME.

We'll see how it does.

if you believe in it, why don't you just bend your own tin with even more and larger fins to make an even better cool collar?

after all, it is just a piece of tin and a hose clamp.

Actually, if it does work, I'll probably make my own. Heck I've got all kinds of plans in the works. I'd like to take my oil lines off and fin them after I get all the dents out (there are several).
I am also going to make some cooler scoops to replace the blinkers. But not black scoops...more of a 964 appeal.

This is just an experiment to see if it helps. Only 34 bucks, plus I get a free oil filter!

The Cool Collar is an axtruded alum part, not some piece of tin you bent up down at the barn with a rusty hammer . In order to maximise the heat transfer from the filter to the collar, there should be as much contact between the two as possible.
Kurt, you might try that heat sink silicone they sell at most electronic supply houses on the Cool Collar. I have not tested it officially, but some have said that it may increase the contact area between the filter and collar making it more effective.

Kurt:

I will swear by mintex pads and the lack of dust build up. I changed mine last year and I haven't noticed any dust on my wheels. I used to wash my car based on the dust buildup on the wheels. Not any more. No noise either. Of course I use my SC for street use only.

I agree, I have the exact same results with the mintex pads. For me, a smart buy.

Also have had my cool collar on for about 8 monthes now, my results are that it has kept my oil temps down maybe, 5 deg f max, on avg. I bought it as part of a "systems" type of approach to oil cooling. The cool collar is just a small part, or link in the chain so to speak. Typical oil temp is 170-180 deg f. after running hard.

Anyway, Having it on certianly can't hurt.

So has anyone tried using a thermal conductor, silicon or otherwise, with a Cool Collar, and does it help much?

What you really need is a nice, modern NOS system. Maybe a 75 or so hp shot.

Why have you not done that yet?

Very funny Jim. That's all I need is to really trash my engine. It's making enough bad noises as it is, but thanks for adding fuel to the fire!

Go ahead KurtB!

I heard Andre Agassi wears Cool Collar wrist bands on the court, and Shaq has a Cool Collar head band.

hehe! for the dough...im in for a cool collar too! its just so much fun makin' fun! The real fun would be finding a way to increase the air flow towards the cool collar...then it might actually work as designed in a PCar. Something like a deflector shield forcing the air to the right of the engine bay...

Cool Colar for sale. . . don't need it anymore after installing a pressure side "finned" Elaphant Racing hard line! Just kidding - keeping the collar for now as never know how hot it might be in August in Atlanta!

Seriously, I don't think it would trash your engine. They even sell the NOS kits in mainstream BMW catalogs these days. There seem to be new, computer controlled, safer systems these days. Its just a gas the increases the efficiency of your engine.

I don't think a mild kit would blow your engine up. Maybe a 50 hp shot. Use it sparingly, push the button only when you really need it to pull ahead in the heat of battle.

That isn't tempting?!?

As you say, drive it hard and rebuild it when it needs to be rebuilt!

Man you and Jim are a riot. You guys must make a ton of dough on the amateur comedy circuit huh? Let me know when you're in town and i'll be sure to swing by and throw a few tomatoes at your act.

right now, my tail is thumping everytime I hit a bump. That's my first priority....I won't be in need of upgrades until i get spanked again. The acura RSX-RSXQPWIJIOLKJ or whatever who tried to put the smack down on my last night at 2 am had no luck, so I'm sitting pretty at the moment.
NO NOS. Do not TEMPT ME

Mintex pads are going on today. I did have those before, then I got OEM by accident, and my car is a mess. Looks cool, the chrome wheels get painted black after two days of driving, so it is back to mintex if I can get it done today.

The cool collar. I've had it one for a few days. Does it make a difference? A small difference, yes, but mainly while you're driving. The guy who had the fan is right.--you have to have wind blowing on that thing for it to really work well. I am thinking about other options...but I have the Jail door type oil cooler offered in 84 (between the trombone and the radiator styles offered), so a fan may not help that one much.

That is way cool targa guy! Love it. Who cares if it's awesomely effective..sure looks cool. Well, I have two spare footwell blower fans, and i"m going use one of them for this. I was going to have one of the fans blowing right into the airbox. I was actually thinking about having it blow right into the airbox (from inside the cone filter). You never know how productive something will be until you try. The way it's designed though, you can put a line to the top of the lid and at least suck in cold air from outside (like youre' doing). That expanded hot air in the engine bay acts like the oppositve of super/turbo charging, so you wanna get the coolest air possible into your mixture.

Hi Kurt...
Thanks, yeah all the local guys here that I've shown it too say it looks cool not at all cheesy. I wanted to make it look as OEM as I could..Hence the the use of the Heater Blower hose.
I've also been thinking of doing something simular to what your thinking about. But instead of a fan I'm going to run a scoop that protudes out and takes in ambient air. I'm not sure who posted this before but I remember he had some interesting data. he used probes to measure the air inside the air intake housing and it seemed that the air being aspirated was heated by the engine compartment. and when he addedd a snorkle that he made of Dryer hose he was able to read much lower temps going into the air cleaner.

Jorge (Targa Dude)

PS.. Oh yeah.. Mintex PBR Pads are the best...!!
