Pendulum Outlaw, Build, Adventures and Misadventures

Pelican forum is a great source of information and inspiration for doing a specialty 911 project. The craftsmanship of some of the projects is amazing. I truly enjoy all the different takes on the 911's, from pure bone stock original, to tribute cars to outlaw / modified cars. And the different opinions!

I picked up a non numbers matching, 1970 911T a couple of years ago from California, good solid car but at some point in its life it has been all apart and poorly put back together, I assume, for the flaky paint job. Lots of electrical issues, took some time to sort out. Different front seats, no driver side seat belts and on and on. It is now a runner, slow and smokey one.

My plan is to build an Outlaw / hot rod inspired car. This will be a beer budget project and ultimate spec will evolve with Hershey, local swap meet and Craig's list finds. The plan is to rough out the mechanical spec first, keeping it as a runner as long as possible before eventually taking it apart for a paint job. This build will take time, as like most of us, I have other commitments, house reno projects, etc.

As I move along, I will post pictures of the slow progress. I hope you will find it interesting. I am always open to constructive feedback and ideas to build a better, more unique 911.

Pictured below is the new deck lid, welded steel panel, flared holes and domed wire mesh screens, and 904 inspired exhaust. My first mig welding projects, probably a bit ambitious to learn how to mig weld on 1mm material, a little bit frustrating at times. The exterior theme will be mono chromatic, smooth and featureless as possible, minimal trim. I love the look of a prototype vehicle when it is just a clay sculpture, no trim, no cut lines, just a smooth shapely volume. Interior will have a more of a mechanical look.

Beautiful rear deck lid!
Keep an eye on the inserts in your tail pipes. They have a habit of breaking the tack welds that hold them in. I took mine out on the track car. Perhaps you can reinforce yours with your welding skills.
I really like the path you're taking.
Regards,
Matt

Edit...it appears you have reinforced the inserts.

sorry, not a fan of the deck lid. i do like the muffler. wish i had put a sport muffler on my 2.7.

i am kinda stuck in my ways and i just dont venture too far from the classic look of the duck tailed long hoods.

i considered doing kind of what you are doing. building a bare bones street/track with no frills. i opted for a 930 instead.

Thanks for all the kind words, good encouragement.
I will try to keep up with everybody's questions. I will do a full pictorial story on the muffler and deck lid after returning from Hershey this week end.
CanAm Fan, car is running and I will put insurance on the 1st of May.

The exhaust tips, I think are a 914 aftermarket part, "914 Stinger". I have always just heard them called 904 cookie cutter styled exhaust. I picked them up at Hershey last year and cut them down. The steering wheel and 935 mirrors are other Hershey finds. Hope to find some nice pieces there this week end.

Workmate is probably as old as the car.

Targamaniac, careful, thanks for the offer, I have an iron engine block that needs to be moved to the future projects shed. To answer your question from the plate thread, yes I do plan to attend some PCA UCR events. I wish the UCR open house was not this week end, can't be two places at once.

Tom...I would check the overall opening on your nice looking holes in the deck lid.
I would hate to have you starve your engine for cooling air because not enough gets in to do the job.
Even expanded metal in an original deck lid does cut down on flow somewhat.
BTW...I used to live not too far from you...near Hamilton...the sunny area of the prvince...LOL.
