Setting Ring and Pinion Depth

Okay, Chris Bennet has managed to talk me down from the ledge and convince me to take a more sane approach to my tranny rebuild. Instead of cramming an older mag tranny into my SC, I am now in the process of rebuilding/refreshing the stock SC tranny and MAYBE swapping in the 7:31 ring/pinion from the mag tranny. Obviously, the emphasis is on "maybe"...has anyone every swapped an older ring/pinion into a newer 915 tranny? How is it done and how do I set the ring/pinion depth?

NOTE: I am in no hurry here. I have time to do research and get tools. The SC tranny can be rebuilt and re-installed and driven for months or years while I try to figure this ring/pinion thing out. The mag tranny is sitting on a corner of my workbench and can stay there indefinitely while I research this topic. No worries.

Thanks,

swapping the R+Ps is just a bolt-in. you just use the shimming that goes with the set you want to use. install the whole thing, diff and all. if you swap the early, thinner ring gear to the electric speedo diff carrier, you will need to find a 2mm spacer to install between the ring gear and diff. try one of the posi or gear suppliers advertized in excellence. the SC is electric speedo, the early one is not. that's the main problem.
