Car audio experts help with sub selection 6.5 or 8 inch
I have been working on a system for my 930. The original speakers had no surrounds left and the whole thing sounded like garbage. I have put a 5 channel JL amp in the car with Focal coaxial 5.25 inch speakers in the doors securely mounted to the skins with MDF speaker rings. I have put infinty Kappa 2 way plates in the rear deck. The amp is 75 RMS watts x 4 and 200 RMS watts to a sub channel that is not hooked up to anything yet. The Car still (as expected by me before the build started) has terible low end. I have not done any sound dampening or deadening but that is still on my list. My question is this: How much Subwoofer is enough? I listen to a variety of music (Classic and New Rock,Country, Billboard, Blues, Etc) and I want accurate reproduction. For comparison I have a Bose system in my "Family Hauler" Suburban and it creates a nice ammount of bass with just a 6.5 inch sub in the center console. There are some very small displacement 6.5 inch subs from JL audio and I could fit one in a triangle shped box that sits on the floor hump between the rear footwells. Or I could put an 8 inch Sub in a small Box behind one of the seats and make it removable.
I just dont know enough to know if 6.5 will be enough bass as compared to the bose system in the suburban. I know this is subjective but any advice here would be helpfull Last edited by Ttownthomas; 04-17-2013 at 11:36 AM.. Reason: brain f**rt |

How about a pair of "Sound Ordinance" 8" subs under the two front seats? I put one under the passenger seat paired with a Kenwood head which works well for me. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ldx46jjPqiF/p_777B8PT/Sound-Ordnance-B-8PT.html

One 6.5 won't be enough, in my opinion. I'd buy one of the ported/self powered subs available on the aftermarket and install it under a front seat.

Sub selection
I used 2 10" subs and built a rear seat delete box. It sounds great! Probably could have went 8" but very little price difference and I am competing with wind noise as I rarely have the Targa top on. Here is a pic:

jbl got804. they are amazing little 8s with some serious output in a nice sealed enclosure about 0.35ft3. on top of that they are cheap too. would match up perfectly with your sub channel on the amp. i run a pair of them in my 911 (due to the build i did) but i think one would be plenty.
