86 Carrera - rear brakes
I need to replace my rear brake pads on a 86 carrera. I've decided to rebuild the rear calipers at the same time. I read the technical article on rebuilding the calipers and it sounds pretty easy. Since this is my first attempt at brake work, does any one have any suggestions or hints.
What's the deal with the 20 degree angle alignment? Is there a target mark on the caliper piston?

Just finished this job myself. It is very easy. Wayne's book notes that the hardest part is getting the caliper off the car - I have to agree. Also, plan on spending a lot of time cleaning everything.
There are no marks for you to follow to hit the 20 degree offset. I just made a template out of cardboard. I understand it's to keep the brakes from squealing. Why not do the fronts as well? The kits are cheap and it won't take much more time. You'll need to bleed them all anyway. Chris. |

One trick, prior to removing the calipers, install some old worn out pads as to move the pistons to the max out position. This should help with the removal of the pistons once the calipers are on a work bench.

Thanks for the information. I plan on doing the front brakes as well except that will have to be the next weekend task.
Are there any good jack points on the back of the car besides the sides?
