G50 Shift fork Upgrade help needed

While attempting replacing the clutch on a '89 Silver Anniversary 911, we ran into a couple of issues.

G50 gear boxes mfr before April 5 1989, need a clutch shaft fork upgrade. The G50 update kit (PP# 915-G50-Kit) also requires the shift fork upgrade (PP# L-116-086-06). According to the Bentley manual, a special drill bit tool is need (Porsche # 000 721 929 20) Anyone have one I may borrow???

Also, Performance Products sells a "G50 Transmission Clutch shaft fix kit (Performance # 911066) The neat thing about this kit is that no machining is necessary (i.e. no special drill bit tool). Has anyone installed it, if so, opinions???

Also the TO bearing requires a new guide tube (PP # L-116-813-06)

Thanks in advance

Jim - send an email to fellow Pelican Head Richard LeSchander. We just did this project on his car a few weeks ago and I'm sure he can give you the details of everything done.

Jim,

I would not attempt the drilling myself. Several kits are available which require no drilling and work very well. I got the Weltmeister kit from John Walker's Workshop - but I also planned on this well in advance. It came with a new shaft, fork and bronze bushings and was around $156. The new guide tube is about 2mm smaller than the old one and you absolutely have to have it. Also get the O-ring for it. DO NOT forget to throw some moly grease on the main shaft splines and also into the fork dimple for the slave push rod. Give me a call if you need help - (703) 298-1628. I have this complete job very fresh in my mind.

Jim,
As they say IMHO the brass bushings are a better design than the porsche replacements. Along with that you don't need that drillum tool as the brass bushings press into the clutch fork. My pivot shaft had also failed in my 87.
You can press the original needle bearings out with a socket and a bench vise.
Email me with any questions.

I too went with the "Automotion" type fix. It's cheaper, it's easier, it's recommended by John Walker... what else could you ask for:D
