Installing shark fin gravel guards...how to make easier to remove later?
 

If one were to install 930 Turbo shark fin gravel guards are there any steps that can be taken to make it easier to remove them later? It seems like these use pretty strong adhesive. What is the best source for authentic shark fins gravel guards? Thanks.

Yes, but who makes the most authentic ones and are there differences in textures? I assume their isn't a text difference between the 930 and 911 versions, just sizing.

I had a set on my widebody for 20yrs, had to remove them to remove and replace
torsion bars. Simple removal, heated the guard a bit with a hair dryer and they peeled right off! I think all of the available ones are made of the same sort of 3M type
black material that is available at body and paint stores in sheets with a peel off backing. As a matter of fact, if you could trace a pattern from an original piece,
you could buy the black 3M stuff and make your own and save Big Bucks.

The most authentic ones are the ones sold by Porsche. Pelican can order those for the 930. Since Porsche never made them for the 911, you're looking at an aftermarket product there. No idea how those compare in texture to the real ones.

I wouldn't do anything special to install them, to make them easier to remove later.

Just make sure the area where they are going is clean and freshly waxed. Removal is a cinch w/ a heat gun/hair dryer.

I would have to disagree on the "freshly waxed" part. you actually don't want any wax underneath a decal or adhesive bonded part.:eek:

Heat guns are the accepted norm for removal....it softens the vinyl and the underneath adhesive. Just be careful not to use too much heat as to blister the paint. On some paints, dependant on color, you may have a shadow of the vinyl.

Adhesive left over can be cleaned up with "goof off".
