parallel to cross-arm regulator conversion
I am upgrading the manual window regulators on my targa to a clean set of power regulators that I purchased used. Last weekend, I changed the hardware on the passenger-side guided by the Bentley manual and some helpful posts from the BBS. Overall, I have to say that the job went well. :D
A few hours ago I went out to change the regulator on the driver-side, thinking that my experience with the passenger-side conversion would make me an old pro. WRONG. When I peeled back the door panel, I was surprised (read: disgusted/frustrated) to find that the manual regulator was the old parallel style. This meant (in my simpleton mind) that I would have to drill the holes for the door-mounted guide. (A bummer, but not the end of the world.). While wrestling the old regulator off the window frame, I realized that the metal frame that sits at the bottom of the window is COMPLETELY different from what I need for my power, cross-arm regulator. :( I checked our host's website and see that they sell an adapter kit that is apparently needed when converting from the parallel to the cross-arm regulators. Does anyone know if the adaptor replaces the exiting metal frame and plastic slide/guide? And can someone help me find Tech Bulletin #7? "Note: When replacing the early-style parallel arm regulators, you need the late-cross arm style, plus the adapter kit. See Technical Bulletin #7" (“http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/por_911M_miscel_main.htm I can post a photo of the window and its old channel/guide if it will help. Thx! |

Here's a pic (if I did this right) of the bottom half of the window that shows the current channel guide and regulator lifter hardware. Hopefully someone out there can tell me how I go from this setup to the hardware I need to use my new cross-arm regulator. (I just called PP and they are unsure what to sell me -- if anything.)

guide types

Thanks, John.
I called PP and they gave me the part number for the driver's side (911-542-057-00) channel, AND they gave me their price. Since I wanted to fix the door tonight I then called the local P-car parts dept and got their price. It was $10 more, but after shipping to Hawaii PLUS added delays it was worth the extra $. I picked up the part, rushed it home, and only THEN realized that something wasn't quite right. :( The part I picked up is the guide for the coupe, but I need the part for a targa/cab. The figure below, from Technical Bulletin 7, shows the difference between the two guide types. The green dot indicating the part I need, the red dot indicating the part I purchased. In addition to bringing home the wrong part, there is apparently a rubber seal/gasket that sits in the metal channel that I need too. Hopefully the poorly stocked P-car parts store here in Hawaii has the parts I need when I return the one I don't need. :) If not I'll contact the boys at PP and order them asap. (btw, John, I posted all of this info for the benefit of others --NOT you-- since you know all of this stuff and have all of the manuals, bulletins, etc.) For those of you who have searched the PP website for "Technical Bulletin #7" and couldn't find it --it's NOT here! But here's a link to it: http://www.systechllc.com/pcar/winregbulletin.jpg Thanks! |
Hey, I know this is an old thread, but my driver side window regulator just broke. The link to the infamous Technical Bulletin #7 is not correct, so can someone point me to the correct one.
Also, the other threads about removing the window assembly talk about the door frame. For a Targa, do I remove the vent window frame? Mine is a '74 and the vent window actually works. Thanks. |

Did you ever get your hands on Tech Bulletin #7? If not, PM me and leave your email address. |
Reviving an old post. I am about to install power windows and cross arm power regulators in a 1973 911T. I need to drill the two 7mm holes for the cross arm on the later regulators. I have studied the technical bulletin 7 with the coordinates for the holes' location ( not a lot of help). The cross arm holes on the regulator are 7 3/4" apart on center. Looking at Wayne's manual for installing the power regulators, it seems to me I can locate the new hole positions pretty accurately off the photo of the later door (that has the holes). Am I missing something here? How precise does the hole location need to be?

Filip, yes I installed the cross arm regulators and the power windows in my 73 911T. Everything works. But the car is still apart for modifications so I haven't yet installed the window frames in the doors to check the alignment. -Greg

Good luck with the restauration! I've opened up my doors to do the revision, turned out the window frame was somewhat bent so that the window did not slide nicely in the window frame (camber of the frame did follow the camber of the window). Had to "bend" the frame somewhat. Works better now.
