Sell a SC motor complete or part out?
I always wanted a really fast 911 and bought the basis, a '74 Targa with 930 bodywork, lightweight interior and some lightweight body parts, big bars, 9+10X17 Ruf wheels, etc, etc, and I was going to have my wrench install a 3.6 motor.
Has a SC motor now which I figured I could sell for almost half of the 3.6 conversion cost but turns out it has 3 broken head studs, so it's not going to be worth near as much, and finances are a consideration. But after looking over used SC parts prices at the Pelican "for sale" forum it looks as though it should be worth much more in parts, opinions? Do I need any special tools to get it apart? I am a mediocre mechanic, probably about a C-, I believe motor has 55,000 miles, no serial number on the flange (I read that this indicates a factory warranty replacement motor) but motor does have all the good upgrades, Carrera tensioners, telescoping oil-return tubes, Turbo valve covers, pop-off valve, and Fabspeed airbox, TIA for any expert advice:) |
I shopped long and hard for an SC motor 2 yrs ago....
With your low miles, I would think you could get $3,000 to $3,500 w/o having to part it out..........That's what I would try to do.......... parting out and shipping is a real pain......I don't think you would be any better in the end? |

Early or Late SC 3.0?
Good running SC motors with less than 100K miles usually sell pretty well. Is it an early US (78-79 big valve), late US (80-83 high velocity), or ROW (Euro big valve)? If the is no number then try to get some casting numbers for reference. More details could get you more $$$$. I got my 83 ROW from a totaled 83 ROW garage queen at Dc Automotive about 1 hour after it was removed. Paid more than $3500 but my motor came with a pedigree on mileage & condition. 3.6 in a 74 should be a fun ride. Cool Targa. :cool:

well shoot, 2 grand off sounds about right, it will have to be rebuilt anyway and the CDI box and fuel filter/accumulator will fetch a few bucks. It looks pretty stock so it might sell quickly. the 3.6 is worth the extra cost, good luck

engine with oil leak and 3 head studs is considered by most a core ... If you are not very methodical I would not recommend taking it apart your self ... the 3.0 is a good engine why not have your wrench rebuild it and fix the head studs when its apart .. saves you from needing a body harness, brain etc from the "upgrade you want to do ....
I would think about it .. I have an 80 SC lightened up and its plenty fast up to a buck and a half ... engine swap not as easy as some here make it seem ... Its not plug and play ... actually it is but you do more than plug it in .... |
any running, not blown up "core" 3.0 is worth $3000. doesn't matter if the studs are broken. the case is worth $1000, crank, $1000+, heads $600, plus all the rest of the stuff is individually worth more than the remaining $400.
