915 transaxle type
Does anyone know how to tell if the transaxle is limited slip or not and which oil to use? Also how difficult should it be to rotate the output shaft for gear selection and which positions as far as in and out and rotated position are which gears when not running?
Any help would be great as I am new to porsche and this forum. Thanks. |

If it was an original LSD gearbox it will have a 12 between the type number and the serial number. So it would start with 915/44 or 915/61 or similar 5 digit type number then either a 12 or no 12 plus another half a dozen numbers.
This is on a rib on the bottom of the main case. The problem is many gearboxes were dragged on shop floors and numbers are gone and many LSD boxes had the LSD "borrowed" for racecars. You need to do the axle spin test to see if it has an LSD in it today. |

Aluminumsphr, the main gear shaft should be easy to push in and out, as well as rotate cw and ccw. There are detent springs whose resistance you will have to overcome. Look up "915 tutorial" for some great info.
