1971 911t is it savable
Ok, here are the pictures of a 1971 911t that I found in storage. Is it worth fixing up, or will it be a money pit.

Every old Porsche is a money pit. I think what you are really asking is can you find actually bring the car to usable condition without paying more than the cost of buying one that is running. I am no expert, but I highly doubt it. Damn shame what happened to that car. You might be able to part it out. I think I saw rust in one of your pictures. That would be just a matter of time before it ruined your restoration project. Take a pass.

I think I see a little rust there too. ![]() If you do your own body work, it is probably savable, but it would probably cost more than a clean one. Hell, almost anything is fixable, with enough time and cash. Tom |

The rust in the smuggler's box may or may not be an indicator of the condition of the rest of the car- most old cars that I've inspected have been rotted there. Some were fine everywhere else, but more often they were tinwormed elsewhere as well.
I inspected a car for one of our new Pelicanites a couple months back- it was a cherry car. That said- if he actually went in to fix everything that was wrong with the car, he'd have more in it than it was worth. So the same is probably true of your find, which is definitely not cherry. As has been mentioned here many a time- it's a judgment call you have to make if you wish to invest more than you can recoup. A buddy of mine restored an old numbers-matching Chevelle convertible; he finished it this year. He's lucky enough to have a car that underwent total frame-off restoration, that he can still sell for more than he's got in it. It's a real stunner. He attends shows often, and get plenty of offers for the car. He won't hear any of them- and he's had some good offers. He simply says "The price is on the license plate." As the would-be buyers move to the back of the car to read the plate, they see "4U 85K." Moral of the story: Sometimes there's more to these projects than financial investment.

What?!?!

Hard to say without seeing more. But I agree with the statement "It depends on what you want ". If you can get it for a REALLY low price it may be worth more consideration.
I will say that the rear bumper is not from a '71. More like a '73 I think. And the exterior looks decent. Let us know more if you would like to have a more broad response. Good luck!

What?!?!

Dang it Dave!!!
I MISSED IT!!! That's the only year for those black bumperettes that width. Wider than the 73 but more narrow than 75 on. Quick way to spot a 74 from the rear. I completely ignored the reflector plate. It didn't even register at first. Must have been disheartened by the possilbe loss of a fellow '71 ![]() Good catch. ![]()

Yikes!! Those last 2 photos make the hair on the back of my neck stand up! But for $500, I'm sure you could make money parting it out. -- Curt

Why So Much Rust
Come on, non galvinized metal in a Chicago Winter. The amount of salt the dept of transportation uses is ridiculas out here. I will now start taking request for parts.

IMHO the car's not worth restoring. I spent 10's of thousands to get my '73 in the shape it's now in knowing I'll never financially get out of it what I put in it. Though you can't put a price on the sh_t eating grin (SEG) on my face everytime I drive it
![]() Buy an early T in decent shape for $10-12,000. It will cost you a hell of a lot more than that to get this one to the SEG point. Part it out, and you'll make some money. In fact, sign me up for the center horn pad, the dash and the shifter knob assuming their in nice shape.

The valvoline oil can in the back seat is a clue about how long this car had been siting and the likely condition of the mechanicals. I can't even remember the last time I saw oil in a can. Perhaps in the mid-80's? For 500 bones, though, you'll definitely make out on the parts.

I'm interested in the engine grille. Let me know what you'd want for it. Also might be interested in the rocker panel trim.
Thanks, Jeff |

Definitely a parts car! But the dash, the trim of the dash, heck even the original radio...all worth $ to somebody looking. I'd guess you could easily make over $500 on the parts...including the cost of a case of PB Blaster...

Same decision here but I decided to go ahead and restore a 1970E targa that had been sitting indoors 10yrs. This one has no rust but will need eng, trans and total strip and paint. If you decide to part out I could use switches, guages, door panels and knobs. etc. lcjjbeav@yahoo.com

I want first dibs on the dash pad!! Part the car out, if you have the time. How are the front fenders?
How does one "find" a 911 in storage? What's the story behind the car?

maybe it's the pictures, but the dash looks near perfect. How did the cyclone miss that and devastate the rest of the interior? Eye of the storm?
