Post Vin # on opening panels?

I seem to remember reading somewhere in the past that 911s had part or all of their vin # stamped into the metal on the inside of the opening panels (seem to remember the hood & engine lid being mentioned - don't know if the doors were included). Can anyone confirm this? If it was done, anybody know if there was a consistent place that the number was stamped in each case?

I have never seen this phenomenon, nor ever heard of it. I have experience with quite a few cars across many different years.

Now and again I've seen the last few digits of a serial number in grease pencil on the inside of the door skins. But no stampings.

I believe this was standard practice with some coachbuilders constructing 356s. Panels would be marked with a sheet metal pencil to indicate which car it was being prepared for. Even then it was not unusual for a car to end up with doors which bore the last few digits of the one before or after it. I suspect by the time our cars were built there was very little hand fitting going on.
Can anyone confirm this?

Cool

My '81 SC has the vin etched in both side windows, and I also found it stamped in the sheet metal right in front of the "smugglers box" between where the hinges are mounted.

I haven't been over every inch, although it does seem like it, but I'm sure there are some more covert stampings.

MANY OF THE BODY PARTS HAVE A VIN NUMBER ON A PAPER OR PAPER-LIKE STICKER THAT SHOULD MATCH THE CARS VIN NO. THESE STICKERS CAN BE FOUND ON ALMOST ALL THE PANELS THAT I'VE SEEN AND IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I LOOK FOR EVEN BEFORE A PPI.

Andy,
I have a 1957 356 and I have the last three digits of my vin stamped on he doors, hood and engine cover. They are also written with yellow chalk on the doors under the panels.
I beleive this practice was carried over to at least the early 911's
