Great Goofs

Ok guys so in one of the magazines I read, there is a section called great goofs were you can post anything stupid that you might have done that is sorta funny. So i'll start us off, the other day i was driving around and ran outta gas. By the time my mom got there with gas, half the neighborhood was there. Now i have a porsche with 87 gas in it running rough that i need to fill with 93 today. Anyone had a stupid moment lately?

Here is the classic:
admit to your stupidity

It wasn't till the end of the 10th page that I contributed...
... Followed closely on the 11th page by a comment that said I had won!

I have a list that's constantly growing.

First: Driving to school (was in high school at the time) and my crank bolt came loose on the S2. Idiot light came on, power steering gave out, oil pump stopped, but if I was late for school I'd get detention. I've never seen cylinders scored that bad before....though last year the crank snapped in half and I scored it again, along with grinding the bearing to dust. Literally. Some big pieces of copper all through that engine!

Second: Went to blockbuster one evening with the top down, it was a nice night. Came back outside and it was not only pouring down rain, but had been for maybe 10 minutes. The interior was drenched.

Third: Hot summer day resulted in a blown ring. I don't like talking about that one.

Fourth: Hit the 4-speed money shift. I swear 1st gear is WAYYY too close to 3rd!

Fifth: After 4 months with a blown engine the only thing I needed was a new clutch slave. Finally came in and I was so excited I tore the boot.

Sixth: Went to install a y-hose (coolant), my first repair job that was all me as a teenager. I was SO proud of myself, told my dad I was a Porsche mechanic! Then I started the car...I routed the hose right in front of the alternator fan.

Seventh: Heater core was leaking all over the place (now I'm 20 here). I bought a new one, $450, and went to install it. I did one heck of a good job too! Oh wait, the guy forgot to send me the seals that go from the core to the heater hoses. I couldn't get it off without prying against those bronze lips on the core which ended up destroyed. Then I get marine sealant and try it again with the seals this time. Got that stuff everywhere (yes my hair too), though only a tiny bit got on the carpet so I did good there. No, it didn't work. $450 for a new core. Now an even broker college kid.

Eighth: Got a new windshield! It's an S2 cab, so even with insurance paying the windshield is $1,000 from the Porsche factory. Few months later I had this annoying squeak that I figured was behind the A-pillar cover. So, what did I do? I took this hook shaped tool and pried against the windshield. CRACK! The convo that followed went something like this:

me: "@#$*@*#!!"
dad: "what?"
me: "I cracked my windshield prying against it."
When he stopped laughing...I take that back, he's still laughing.

Nineth: 16 and learning how to properly wash and wax a car. I decided to wash the '75 (it leaks so we give it a sponge bath) and it was hot, Louisiana summer. I was washing it in direct sunlight letting water bead up and sit there. Sun cooked the water spots into the paint. Anybody ever seen a pokadot 911? Luckily I became an expert at waxing and it looks great.

I've saved the best for last, none of yall have heard of this one:
It was a just after Hurricane Gustav, like that night or the next day, and I was in high school. I thought I'd take my friends to our sailboat just because. I mean really, "hey yall I'm thinking of taking the Porsche to the boat and chill around the kitchen table," I was enjoying being 17 to say the least. Well, for yall that don't know how to care for a boat during a hurricane, you loosen the lines a lot to accommodate for the rising water, and then take the anchor and set it out like 30 feet into the field for added safety. Well power goes out during hurricanes so the street lights weren't on, my friends had gone and I had to turn off the lights in the boat. Can anybody guess what happened? Oh yea, drove right over a boat anchor. The ground was muddy and soaked from the rainfall so the wheels were just spinning, mud was flying everywhere, and I was wedged on that stupid anchor. Punched a good sized indentation/hole on the bottom panel (not the actual painted part, but where rough stone guard is). I got home and that convo went something like:

me: "dad, I ran over a boat anchor with the Porsche."
dad: "well...can't say I've heard that before."

So I've been monitoring oil consumption and waiting for the level to drop to the min mark. That day was yesterday so I go to add a quart of VR1. I grab my long narrow funnel, insert into oil tank neck and begin to poor. I was looking at something else while I was pooring, and when I returned my attention to the funnel, it was overflowing from the top and oil is pooring onto the engine. WTF! No oil is going down the funnel!

I forgot to remove the shop towel that I stuffed into the funnel to absorb the oil from the last time I used it....
