MORE Fuchs Refinishing Questions
 

I read many of the Fuchs wheel refinishing threads (a favorite topic I'm sure), but still have a few questions.

I'm going for the 80s factory-style finish with the black satin centers and aluminum colored rims.

• I prefer the "muted" look of the RSR style rim. Has anyone tried the wurth silver alloy paint? Wurth German Alloy Silver Wheel Lacquer
• Is it recommended to clear the wheel after painting for long-term durability and protection?
• The only wurth clear I can find is "gloss" -- in fact all the clear branded as being for wheels is gloss. Obviously I'd like to keep the satin look for the centers. Will the gloss clear ruin this, and if so, is there a satin clear that works well?
• Is Eastwood a decent alternative to Wurth? Their products seem marketed toward the muscle car crowd, but I would imagine it's high quality stuff.

Paint the silver and clear first, then the satin black centers last.

It will if you scuff the clear where you will be painting black. Time-consuming, but it can work.

If clear sticks to paint, why wouldn't paint stick to clear?

Hi...Not in anyway knocking Wurths products but many of the other major automotive paints are very good. Ferreri for example uses PPG....With that said, SEM has many excellent products. They make a Satin clear including Flat. Their Satin black is also very good.
Being that prep is everything when painting, I hope you don't mind me suggesting, but you should also pick up a can of 'silicon-wax' remover to clean between all coats. It's a standard product/procedure that all paint shops use. ...Happy sanding!

BTW...You can also purchase a 'flattener' for obtaining whatever gloss you are after. Any automotive paint supplier.

I forgot to mention an important step.....Aluminum requires a coat of an etching primer before applying any other coating...Ask your local auto paint supplier -Or give it a Google.

I did some googling on SEM and my head is spinning for all the options...seems like they don't offer basic colors like "satin black" -- they're focused on OEM match bc/cc for repair shops. I'm sure they have something that will suit but I'm looking to place an order and have it show up at my door.

This is really an excellent product for any anodized trim such as wiper arms
It also comes in High gloss; I have used it for years...It makes a faded wiper arm look like factory new.

BTW...SEM is 'very' big in leather, plastic, and vinyl repair. Color Coat Chip Card
E.G. - Boeing is a big customer of theirs for their interior repairs.

I have used different SEM products for decades, and have found all of them to be very good...For full paint jobs I prefer using PPG's line and 3M for their sheet and machine paper; compounds and polish...Many shops use 3M finishing compounds.
3M as you may know bought out Meguiar's about 3 years ago which has a much larger public recognition of their products, so I presume some of their products are the same but in different packaging. Paint Finishing Products

There are many products that will do the job for you... SEM has been around for a very long time and have a very good reputation; You'll like their products end results.

Wow Michael, thanks!! There is no mention of the Promax satin black in the catalog I downloaded from their site -- they only list flat, semi-gloss and gloss.

I'm in the process of giving my Fuchs a RSR finish. Does anybody know the paint colors for the grey and black satin finish?

My body man will use PPG, what are the color codes for this brand?

Rwilner - I like you seem to have spent a lot of time reading "Fuch restoration" threads. I finally decided to take a stab at it with my own wheels and while I was at it move the stock 7's to the front and mount 9's in the rear. Here is the down low on my process and materials. Hope this helps anyone else looking to tackle this "little" job.

[*]Stripped wheels using aircraft stripper.
[*]Polished outer lip. This was a process that eventually had me using 100 grip stand paper to remove the anodizing, then proceeding through a series of rubbing compounds. Plan on invesing some time!! Cant' image polishing the entire wheel!
[*]Taped off polished lip and applied etching primer.
[*]Applied "Metallic Matte Nickel" Rustoleum #7277.
[*]Taped off the pedals and then applied "Satin Black" Rustoleum #7777.
[*]Lastly, mounted Bridgestone RE11's sized 205/55/R16 front, 245/45/R16 rear.
[*]Car was also lowered to Euro spec and Targa bar stripped to down to stainless.

Wow, beautiful wheels (and car!). I did something similar --- replaced the 6s and 7s with 7s and 8s.

I am putting this off until the winter because I just got my car back on the road a week ago after a full suspension rebuild (among other things) and even the thought of taking it off the road again during driving season makes me...sad.

I am debating between the standard black centers and the rsr style finish. My car is a light blue and I think the rsr finish would complement the look very nicely.

I've never seen the rsr style finish in person. I'm hoping I can spy some rsr wheels at cars and coffee/rambles this year.
