Instruments rubber ring, retrofit ???

Can you retrofit the rubber ring that allows , say, a 911SC's instruments to stay put in the dash and yet pop out easily into an early 911/912 ?

I just installed a new set of Palo alto jewelry in my car, all seems to work, so I put in the dash etc... Now the tach is playing possum, or pegs, or works occasionally, all pointing ot a bad ground... I really do not want to pull all this stuff again, and I'm wondering if I can use that rubber ring instead of the nasty metal clips that require elvish fingers to put on as I diagnose my issue... Or won't they fit ???

Thanks !

Okay, this is from memory so it might be off a little, but I've had both early 912's and later 911's and as I recall, the early car instrument holes--like the one's your have--are slightly smaller in diameter so using a rubber ring will not work unless you enlarge the opening slightly. However, I do remember inserting a gauge in my 912 without using the bracket. I wrapped the gauge body, just behind the bezel ring, with a rubber stretch tape used to seal leaks in hoses and such, and got a snug fit--just like the later ones with the rubber ring.

Maybe this will work for you, self-fusing silicon tape:
