Question Alternator Cone/Shroud?

After fighting some voltage issues, I went ahead and replaced the alternator with a brand new Bosch rebuild from our host. In removal and replacement of the old alternator (my first successful attempt) I discovered that the alternator cone/shroud had some broken metal fins. Since I wanted to get the new alternator in and test my voltage and power issues, I installed the new unit WITHOUT the cone/shroud.

Question(s): Can I run without the cone, and what does it do, really?

I've read the posts about air flow, and I just can't see the real air flow benefit. The one fin looks like it simply diverts air to the left side heater/exchanger supply through the engine shroud. The other fin looks too small to be effective at all. Besides, without the fins and cone, The air would flow down to the cylinders anyway. I just can't imagine any kind of venturi effect or cyclone of air that the alternator cone would produce that would cool the engine any better than unobstructed or un-diverted air right from the fan.

If there is an alternator-related reason for the cone, I'd like to know that too. I know the Porsche engineers don't usually add useless bits to car (Carrera engine notwithstanding), but this just puzzles me.

I have fixed the metal fins and cone, and will put it in if the collective group chimes in, but I'd rather not go through the PIA of getting those all those little nuts off/on unless I have to.

Car is running perfectly, as an FYI.

All the best...
