DEER GOD!!! I'm a believer. Be careful out there.

Well, I've been watching the weather to see if the year might offer one good warm day to do a run, so the tires at least have some grip. Today was such a day, mid 60's, fairly Sunny.

So, five in the morning I wake up and set out. All was well, took a bit to get tires to warm up but it got there, I passed by a total of four deer during my drive, right next to the road, very close.

However, its deer number four that decided to be a douche. I just popped out of gear to coast in neutral to the round-a-bout when out of the left corner of my eye I see something start to dart across the road. I get on the brakes and because there was no one in the oncoming lane I try to go around it but at the same time it decided to change direction and run forward. Needless to say I gently punted the deer in its bottom, hear a thunk and glass shattering, and of course my brain going "f*ck me". Goes without saying this irresponsible deer darts away without even stopping to see what it has done, never even got a chance to exchange insurance information.

I continue driving and right at the round about there is a parking lot, I pull and brace myself for the worst. I step outside and somehow only the headlight is damaged. Glass, and even the plastic housing tabs holding it got torn off the tabs the hold the headlight in place. I'm not very religious, but Deer God may be real.

Anyone have a spare 964 H5? Perhaps time to go H4?

Obligatory pictures of the day.

Did the exact same thing last year! Deer jumped

just as I locked the brakes momentarily before I hit it. The hoof hit the headlight lens . Only damage was the lens and trim ring!! The deer flipped over the car and over my 6 y/o daughter in the passenger seat of my 85 cab. It was like watching a slow motion action movie! Nnnooooooo! The deer landed in the ditch and ran off. I felt very lucky that evening. Sounds like you did too!

Deer

Been there, done that, don't want to repeat the experience!

I also caught the fourth deer that suddenly ran across the road while I was driving my 914-6 at night with my son, up in Wisconsin. Managed to miss the first three, but just nicked the 4th with my passenger headlight. We stopped, looked at each other, and drove slower through the rest of the evening. The deer ran off shaking it's rear leg a bit and also didn't stop to exchange information .

Deer can do a lot more damage than just a headlight! Drive carefully!

Driving home with my first Porsche last night I almost hit a deer crossing the road.
I thought you got to be kidding! So on the back roads nearer to my house where deer are more common I dropped it in lower gear to keep to motor louder in hopes of scaring them a bit Made it home ok.

I guess that's what they mean by "deer in the headlights."

What a great road! You should charge admission (but only to lesser car owners). Glad yours came off relatively unscathed. H4s are a good choice because it is easy to go to higher wattage bulbs with just a couple of relays. I run 80/120s and they are great and don't blind oncoming cars.

The other night I was driving down a divided dark parkway at speed. I am in the left lane when the headlights illuminate a doe literally standing on the curb, parallel to the road, head on. The deer is looking right at the car. Thank the deer gods that she freezes in the headlights. It was three feet from my mirror as I went by with five cars right behind me.

The road at the Hawk's Nest is great, but way too short - maybe a 1/2 mile for the curvy section. It would be so much better if those curves lasted several miles. Anyway, it's a good thing that oversized forest rat didn't cause more damage.

I always start to see more deer at all hours this time of year. And yes, this IS an amazing road. Makes me so happy to live in upstate New York! - Matt

They're everywhere around here. I had this thread open and had walked away from the laptop. Needed to make a run to town. Headed back in (I live down a one lane road and the neighbors feed the deer) I'm about 300 yds from the house, brights on, head on a swivel, creeping in at about 25 MPH. Then there he is, caught the flash out of the corner of my eye. Stabbed the brakes hard enough to chirp the fronts as the windshield filled up with 8-point with only a couple of feet between him and the bumper.

I know this board is made up of better than average drivers but I gotta put this out there anyway. Be careful. I manage appraisers across two rural states. They write tons of animal hits. Thing is for every two repairable animal hits they write another wadded up into a ball total loss because Leroy or Martha Ann's first instinct is to swerve to miss the animal. If you don't have a clear out, hit the deer instead of the ditch. In all my years I've only seen one claim where the actual deer managed to cause injury to a person. -J

They're a little randy this time of year! My mom had one sitting in her passenger seat after it cleared the opposite lane and the drivers side, but fell a little short. Hitting a deer, elk or moose in a low car is not smart. Trucks, with large cattle bars in front and lots of lights on top... That's how you do it, city boys. Take the weeeee cars out only when all the stars aline. Why take the chance.

Dawn and dusk are the worst times around here. Rest of the time, it's pretty safe.
They're a real problem in Southern NY. Greenwich, CT had the right idea. Issued a special permit one year and culled the herd! Same with the stinkin' geese.
Shoulda heard that outcry from the animal lovers...none of whom have actually hit one at full speed. Having done so, I can tell you you're lucky to live through it.
