How to make Carbon Fiber

well I know the general principle of makeing Cf is like fiberglass...a sheet of carbon weave with resin...

but CF needs to be heated and pressurized...in an autoclave

well I have access to an autoclave and a hazmat hood...I work in a lab...so autoclaving and working with the resin should be simple...just don't tell my boss

I am not trying to make body panels, but if I can make molds out of plaster of paris and make little things like...brake cooling rotor shields, I like the CF fan shroud...etc...

is the CF weave expensive? where can I get some?

anyone have experience?

thanks

MJ

TAP Plastics carries it now, as well as kevlar and CF kevlar composites. I bought some to experiement with, but haven't got around to doing anything with it yet.

I'm sure if you went onto Google and tries something like +"carbon fiber" +supplier you'd get something.

yup:

I'm not a big fan of CF 'cause aluminum or fiberglass can usually do duty but I understand your interest.

I was going to post a link to that very website. Check out the 510s on that site - they are badass, especially Yellow Fever.

that carbon fiber dash pad is seeming like a good idea since mine is cracked....hmmm?

I think I remember seeing a carbon fiber dash on e-bay for like $500.

hey that would be slick and I think the autoclave is big enough for a targa top....hmmm maybe I can start a business...and lower center of gravity for all you targa owners...

hmmmm

The link with instructions doesn't say anything about heat and pressure. The process described is much like laying up fiberglass.

Are there different processes for making CF?

Chuck:
You're right, the process that was shown was basically a wet layup. You CAN use CF in this manner but it leads to heavier parts that don't have uniform strength due to somewhat uneven resin application. The autoclave process that I have seen usually uses a pre-impregnated cloth with resin - Hence the reputation for being a difficult material to work with.

Andrew M

Yea, I'd go in for that!!! That would be incredable!

I'd drop 500$ on that for sure!

Give it a try!
