Exhaust upgrades in California
Hello, I have an 82 SC with a new engine. Because I live in Los Angeles, and much to my chagrin, we bolted the rusty old stock exhaust system back onto the shiny new motor. Needing to register my car, do I have any options other than OEM? Can I at least add an aftermarket sport muffler and still pass the visual smog test? Dansk, M&K, Bursch, etc.
Thank you!! RH |

Exhaust
As a fellow CA resident, I feel your pain brother regarding the strictest emission laws in the country. The easiest route is a cat bypass and and a two out muffler because it is easy to change when it's time for the smog sniffer and it will preserve your very expensive cat for the next go round. I am guessing a 15HP gain it it will look better.
I had this set up on an 84 3.2 and it worked great. The sad thing is a good running 3.0 or 3.2 will easily pass the non-visual rolling test with no cat if you lean it out. Oh and if you need to replace the rusty heat exchangers I think you can buy stainless steel stock exchangers from dansk but it will cost you. I finally got sick of the smog hassle and bought a smog exempt car which in CA is 75 and earlier and it is really nice not to worry about the test. Good luck!!!!

you can run whatever you want. these smog techs dont know 1 thing about 911's
at least the ones ive had. ive got a dnsk premffler and a monty. the last smog check i did was without the o2 sensor even there. although that did seem to confuse the guy a bit, he was looking for it for a while and then gave up. i have a really cool trick that can be done with the o2 system, just in case the car is giving you a hard time passing.

after the cat you can do what you want even if the tech knows his stuff .. mine does and I have a muffler delete in place ....
though there are not many smog shops that know what it is suppose to look like ...If you have a cat and an 02 sensor your likely ok as long as you can pass the sniffer .... |

Thanks for the tips and info everyone. I think I'll start with just installing a Dansk sport muffler and leave everything else stock. Maybe later add a Euro Pre-Muffler with O2 sensor. I'd like to get one that looks as much like a stock Cat as possible. Does Dansk still make these? I couldn't find them on the Pelican site... Thanks!!
