Paul Weir
Paul used to advertise a lot in Excellence and had a pretty big operation rebuilding Porsche engines in Seattle......I tried calling his shop to ask a question and his phone did not work....also he does not have an ad in Excellence....does anyone know if he went out of business?
|
Yeh he IS out of business. Dont know all the facts but i know he isnt in the porsche fixing biz anymore. Some of his guys that worked there are other places around seattle. Don't know where but if you just need a wrench then there is plenty around the area. Don't know why but seemed everyone who was paul's competition hated the guy or the business he ran.. Maybe someone will fill ya in more but i remember he was like the enemy.. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/uzi.gif
Do a search on paul weir since all this was covered awhile back.. |

thanks....never dealt with Paul before...my mechanic Akers is out of town for a couple weeks. I think Akers is a really really good shop btw..very honest and fair and decades of experience. I got my question answered here on the boards yesterday.

I just had a good experience with Redmond European - 425-376-2655. Talk with Monty. He seems to know his stuff and take pride in a job done correctly.
On top of that, the labor rate is right and I saw no evidence of padding on my recent clutch job there. YMMV Jamie |
Give Johny Walker the business. He's kind enough to answer a lot of questions on this board and just hosted a swap meet last weekend.

Paul's rebuilding shop really was a nice setup. I mean, everything was there for a great biz; real tools, dyno, etc. The hit I always heard was that they simply liked to race more than work, which is understandable, but I also bought my car from a PO who had massive receipts from PWeir and I was disappointed to see that, when they replaced the license plate bulbs for the PO, they neglected to put any of the four, black cross-head screws back in. The units were in by friction. In addition, the #1 cylinder had been diagnosed via leakdown as 95% shot!!! Denny had it at 75% good on my PPI, and I have used Techron and daily usage to bring it back up to under 10% leakdown by way of a leakdown at John Walker's.
Mark was the front man in the office and I liked him alot; he really helped me without my spending a penny. Kinda sad that such an ambitious and useful outfit is now down. But the satellites that have sprung up have to give us all hope in the Seattle repair scene! Jw [This message has been edited by Jdub (edited 08-16-2001).] |
It does seem wierd- I tried to call and got no answer also- went to his web site,(which is still probably up), looks like this guy spent almost as much as the factory on his operation and ads. Basic claim seemed to be;"We are the best, smartest, etc, etc Porsche guys in the world and anyone who takes their motor anywhere else or,(God forbid),tries to rebuild it themselves, is asking for a world of pain.
Can't say that I'm sorry to see him gone- the world has enough self-proclaimed Porsche gurus complete with "I'm late on a boat payment" prices. $3800.00 for a stock rebuilt 915 (not ltd.slip)??? Kiss my ***!! Maybe he was the best Porsche mechanic in the world-I'll be watching the race reports for his name. Old saying- "When the green flag drops, the BS stops!" |
I left 4 phone calls for Paul Weir...a couple weeks later Mark Peters called me saying he was following up on Pauls calls and wanted to advise me of his taking over the business. Its called Gerber Motorsport Ph:206-352-6911 Fax: 206-352-2235 His E-mail address: Gerbermotorsport.yahoo.com
I owe him this courtesy he is obviously trying his best. Jack |
I saw where Paul Weir has a 935 (w/upsidedown trans) for sale in the back of this weeks autoweek. I hope I never have to sell my toys...

I was an apprentice wrench for Paul a while back, and have seen that car up close and first hand. Trust me, NO expense was spared on that car! If someone is looking for a true 935, that is the car to buy. When I left, he was in the process of installing a billet titanium spool differential that cost him like $15000. The guy did know his stuff when it came to P-cars, I just think he needed a better business model, and had/bought WAY too many used parts. I remember one of the last weeks I was there, he bought an old rusted out 914, and had me COMPLETELY dismantle for parts. It took me two days. The price he paid for the car, and the labor (paying me), was far more than he would ever recoup selling the usable parts off of that thing! Oh well.

mark didn't actually take over the business, but rather got together two other displaced employees, hooked up with walter gerber and started a shop in the magnolia area. much smaller than the weir enterprise, but seems they have been quite busy already, thanks to appropriating weir's customer list. best of luck to them.

by the way, the "935" is just a modified 77 930. not a factory race car. it was not even close to being finished. i doubt if any of the special parts will go with the car.
|
Wow, I just assumed that the "935" was a factory car due to the time and money he had into it(this is the same white one we are talking about right?). But come to think of it I never did ask about it's origin. How far along did it get? When I left it just had the Ti spool put in the differential, the 935 pedal cluster, and the custom made fuel cell installed. Also, does anyone know if he still has the "blue" car, or is it for sale too? That thing was a rocket, and made your heart skip a beat when it fired up.

Hmmm, I thought Paul Weir's had gone into bankruptcy. If that is the case, who actually owns the "935"?
|
As far as "original" 935's go, isn't there a fine line between a factory car and a privately built one? After all some of the most sucessful 935's were built from parts.
|
Yes, you are right there, many of the winning cars of the era were built by teams like Kremer and similar. The difference is they were famous teams and the cars were successful and have some history
|
Speeder,
I don't like to ask, but do you work for the National Enquirer? Seems like your grasp of the facts is different to my experience. |
Uh, no junior,(I mean flat six), I do not work for the National Enquiror. Which "facts" are you refering to? I'm pretty sure that was an opinion I posted above.
I may have been a little rough on Paul Weir- maybe he is the best in the world. If so, I'm sure his name will be prominent in future race reports. That's all I'm saying. |
I was referring tot he $3800 for the 915 rebuild, was this what you were given as an estimate?
I agree with you about the "I am the best etc.." attitude.. No chance of seeing him in any race reports as I don't think he ever raced anyway and with the "935" for sale, has nothing to use It's a tough business, making money repairing any car and the I'm better than you ego doesn't work.. |
