Question Are all turbo tie rod kits created equal

I'm looking at upgrading to the turbo tie rods for my '89 carrera and have come across a huge difference in pricing. Are all the kits the same or is the $180 automotion kit better than AJ USA's $115 kit? Thanks for the help.

I think they're all the same.

Good question, actually. I would think, and I think Wayne stated, that there is only one manufacturer for these, but at least one member (Leland) has reported quality control problems w/ an aftermarket set. $180 is a sucker price for these, BTW.

I bought a set and installed them on my 75 last year. Looked at them just recently and the rubber boots are beginning to crack. BTW does anyone know the reason you put the spacers in? I tried it both ways and decided to leave them off.

There was an article on this subject in 911&PorscheWorld recently. If I remember correctly they advised against leaving the spacers off. For some reson you had to use them.

Without the spacer, the threaded tie rod shaft can "bottom out" before the tie rod is screwed all the way in, causing a less than secure attachment.

I too have a set of turbo tie rods from a non-Pelican supplier. They are little over a year old with about 4K miles and the boots on the rod end are completely split.

Anyone know where I can get replacement boots? I noticed that they are only held on by a spring clip. The ends are as tight as new but the boots suck.

I don't know if this would be the same with other suppliers.

yes you must use the spacers. The tie rods will bottom out before completely tightening, just as Argo described.

thanks for the info guys, I'll look around ... I recall seeing several places in Panorama offering them. Looked like Vertex was the cheapest, but I'm also happy to support this list if it's close.

ebay huh? =^)

Cool

Well guy, when I installed the turbo tie rods, I thought the same thing so i measured the old ones. They were the oem part. The new rods had exactly the same amount o thread in mm as the old ones.

PS. I was born at night, just not last night.

Rubber boots

I put very thin coat of synthetic grease on
all my rubber, and they seem to last double
or better than their normal life. All my rubber,
cv joints, turbo tie-rods, air cleaner straps
are still good after 4 yrs of daily 75 miles
drive. Looks like this grease protects rubber
from ozone.

I bought a kit from our host a year ago. After jacking the car up and getting ready to install it I found I already have turbo tie rod on my car. $110 shipping included it is yours.

MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL THE SUPPLIED THICK "WASHERS" WITH YOUR TURBO TIE ROD KITS. IF NOT, YOU WILL END UP DAMAGING THE ENDS OF THE RACK WHEN THE RODS BOTTOM OUT !!
